After three riveting days of simulated congressional hearings on the U.S. Constitution in Washington, D.C., Lincoln High School from Portland, Oregon, placed first in the 27th Annual We the People National Finals Monday.

Amador Valley High School’s “We the People” team placed second, with Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School for Government and International Studies from Virginia placing third.

This was the 13th time Amador Valley has represented California in the We the People national competition. The school’s team won the national championship in 1995.

The competition results were announced at an awards ceremony Monday evening before an audience of more than 1,900 students, teachers, coordinators, judges and other program participants.

The Amador students comprise the Competition Civics class, taught by Brian Ladd.

Other winners were:

Fourth Place: Fishers High School, Indiana

Fifth Place: Vestavia Hills High School, Alabama

Sixth Place: East Grand Rapids High School, Michigan

Seventh Place: Grandview High School, Colorado

Eighth Place: Maine Township South High School, Illinois

Ninth Place: Corona del Sol High School, Arizona

Tenth Place: Highlands High School, New Mexico.

  3. Comp Civics families know the absolutely insane amount of time, teamwork and dedication it takes from every member to compete, let alone get to the national level. This experience will certainly change your life–and perhaps ours–as you go on to become leaders and advocates in our community. Congratulations to all the members, teachers and coaches! Chris Miller and the members of the Rotary Club of Pleasanton salute the Amador Valley High School Competition Civics Club for their outstanding accomplishment of placing second in the National Competition in Washington, D.C. We salute Brian Ladd and all the other folks that assisted in the many, many hours of coaching and preparing the team members first in the competition within California and then the intense preparation on the road to Washington. Way to go Competition Civics team you made Amador Valley High School and the entire community of Pleasanton very, very proud of your success.
