On Friday at approximately 5:15 p.m., my doorbell rang. It was a young man. He asked if I had a gray cat. He told me a cat had just been hit in front of my house. I went outside and discovered another young man and a woman kneeling down in the street along the sidewalk. A car had hit a cat and not stopped driving. The cat was badly injured and on top of the sewer grate along the street. The young men had witnessed the event, as they were passing by on their scooters and stopped to help. The boys were visibly upset. A woman had stopped her car and had called the police, but was frustrated that animal control had not come out yet after 30 minutes. The cat was lying on the storm drain and slid down into the gutter. At this point another neighbor and I each called again and said we knew the cat was still alive and needed help to get it out of the gutter. Another 20 minutes passed by and the police came who then in turn called the fire department. The cat was rescued and taken to the Emergency vet in Dublin.
I called the next day to check on the status of the cat and found that it's owner had been found and that the cat had had surgery Friday night, but had worsened on Saturday morning and was to be euthanized.
It was a sad ending for the poor cat and it's family. It did show me though that there is great character and compassion among our local teens and I want to give a shout out to the young men for doing the right thing. It is also a reminder that people drive much too fast through the downtown streets and that we have neighborhoods filled with animals and children. Please slow down!
I made a donation to Tri Valley Animal Rescue which helps work with our local animal shelter to prevent euthanasia and to provide homes for unwanted and stray pets.If you too, would like to make a donation here is the information.
