Is Coffee, Beans & Bistro Closed too?

Original post made by Chris, Amberwood/Wood Meadows, on Jul 23, 2008

I have seen the windows boarded/papered up in the last few weeks, Charlie always had a hard time in that spot...What a prime spot, but it was always closed early, even in spring or summer...What a great spot it would be for an old fashioned bbq spot...bbq, corn on the cob, cornbread and bbq steak sandwiches!!!! It would be nice to have something like that there...>Not another hi end, over priced restaurant or clothing store!!!!

I remember bringing my son into Coffee Beans and Bistro to use the bathroom so he could blow his nose. We had just walked from the Safeway area. I told him we could get a drink there if there was something healthy, (pure juice, no soda, etc.) While I waited outside the bathroom door for him, a young woman came from behind the counter and said, "Are you going to buy anything?" I said I wasn't sure. She told me I couldn't use the bathroom if I wasn't going to buy anything. I said again that I wasn't sure, (I hadn't checked what they had yet.)
When my son came out he and I looked and found apple juice, which we bought. As I paid I asked for the manager. She said he wasn't there. (I wanted to tell him that accosting people at the bathroom door was bad for business.)
My son and I sat outside with his drink and the girl came out. She said she was calling the manager for me (strange, I didn't ask her to) but he wasn't answering. She asked if there what the problem was and I told her. She said, "Admit it, you wouldn't have bought anything if I hadn't told you only paying customers can use the bathroom."
She was clearly angry. She gave me the manager's name (Charlie) and phone number, (which I hadn't asked for) and that was the last time I ever went to Coffee Beans and Bistro. Before that bizarre little incident I had gone frequently.

No it's not going to be a sports bar. It's going to be more like a typical restaurant.

Another typical restaurant... doesn't sound too exciting or promising. I like the idea of a casual bbq sandwich place that Chris mentioned above. Even better, how about a walk-up-window near the back of the shop, something like the appeal of Meadowlark Dairy with their ice cream cones? Corn-on-the-cob, grilled sausage or hot dogs, and keep the indoor and outdoor seating? Just something casual and not overpriced, fitting in with the Tully's, Cold Stone, and High-Tech Burrito atmosphere? A family spot.

John, I am with you, it would be so refreshing to just have something casual to eat, for the whole family they would do a great business there! I sure hope it is not a sports bar!!!!! More noise, drinking and problems! We don't need that.....

We had a similar experience with rudeness at Coffee Beans & Bistro and never went back. We usually went during our farmer's market run on Saturdays, but was rudely told by the person marking coffee that "they didn't have that kind of coffee" after we had ordered and paid for it at the cashier. The guy was a real jerk about it too and completely lost our business.

A long time ago, pre-Starbucks, I read a proverb that went something like 'only a person with a smile should open a tea shop.' Starbucks has made millions off that idea. The last crew that ran Coffee Beans and Bistro should have been selling laxatives. You want warmth in a coffee shop.
