Now, at 97 years old, Danville resident Joe Alvarez can look back at what was gained and what was lost personally and in terms of the country he served during World War II and later in the Korean War.

Gina, I really enjoyed reading your story of Joe Alvarez's life. It was interesting to hear about his military life especially since it is Memorial Weekend. Thank you for honoring his service. Joe, thank you for sharing your history with all of us and thank you for your service. We all need to be respectful to people who serve and it is a shame that veterans don't get the respect they deserve. Let us all remember to thank the people who keep us safe and free.

Great story! Thank you,Joe, for your service to the U.S.A.! My Uncle, James Kendrick, was a gunner on the St.Louis, when it was attacked at Pearl Harbor.
