Gasoline Pricing

Original post made by Michael Austin , Pleasanton Meadows, on Apr 28, 2021

There are rumors that there will be a gas shortage this summer.

In the upper mid west (Dakotas) the price of gasoline for regular unleaded is $2.75 gallon. There are no refineries within thousands of miles of the Dakotas.

Here in the San Francisco Bay Area the price of gasoline is over $4.00 per gallon, unless you purchase your gas at Costco, it is well under $4.00 per gallon. We have multiple refineries here in the Bay Area.

Cost to transport gas to stations in the Bay Area is minimal compared to the cost to transport gas to stations in the Dakotas. What is the cause for this location cost and price? Maybe it is Bakken oil fields in the Dakotas and Canada! But that resource is transported to the Bay Area.

"What is the cause for this location cost and price?"

California's special type of gasoline, taxes, cap and trade fees, lack of competition, etc.

We are never going to see lower prices in this state because elected officials do not want people using gasoline in the first place and they are not personally affected by higher prices. If world oil prices ever declined (and fuel prices with it), we'd be told another gas tax increase was "affordable", "modest", and "required to reduce highway congestion".

And, for those people that gave up their gas powered car for battery powered car will soon be rewarded with Vehicle miles traveled tax,(VMT tax).

1 - Ca taxes on gasoline are the highest in the country, and I'd actually be "ok" with that if they actually funded things they were proposed to fund.

2 - Gasoline prices in Pleasanton is controlled by a small group that is relentlessly fighting Costco coming to Pleasanton.

3 - Prices will continue to go up, there are many affordable EV options and more coming. Jump ship and be much happier - hedge with solar and let someone else pay the gas tax.
