SGT Covert was killed on February 14, 1971 in Quang Tri Province during the Vietnam War. He was laid to rest at the Golden Gate National Cemetery.
SGT Covert and his family moved to Pleasanton when he was six years old. He later graduated from Amador Valley High School. He joined the US Army and in December, 1970 he was sent to South Vietnam. He served as a combat engineer with Company A, 7th Engineer Battalion, 5th Infantry Division. His unit had just completed participation in Operation Lam Son 719 when his vehicle was hit by a rocket propelled grenade.
SGT Covert is one of at least twenty one Pleasanton area residents who have died while serving our nation during military conflict. These twenty one names will be inscribed on the Pleasanton Veterans Memorial to be constructed this summer at Pioneer Cemetery.
A ground breaking ceremony for the memorial will be held on Monday, June 27th at 1:00PM at the cemetery. The public is invited to attend.
