Pleasanton Veterans Memorial Update: June 17th

Original post made by Doug Miller, Country Fair, on Jun 17, 2016

Today, June 17th would have been Pleasanton resident US Army SGT Richard Covert’s 65th birthday.

SGT Covert was killed on February 14, 1971 in Quang Tri Province during the Vietnam War. He was laid to rest at the Golden Gate National Cemetery.

SGT Covert and his family moved to Pleasanton when he was six years old. He later graduated from Amador Valley High School. He joined the US Army and in December, 1970 he was sent to South Vietnam. He served as a combat engineer with Company A, 7th Engineer Battalion, 5th Infantry Division. His unit had just completed participation in Operation Lam Son 719 when his vehicle was hit by a rocket propelled grenade.

SGT Covert is one of at least twenty one Pleasanton area residents who have died while serving our nation during military conflict. These twenty one names will be inscribed on the Pleasanton Veterans Memorial to be constructed this summer at Pioneer Cemetery.

A ground breaking ceremony for the memorial will be held on Monday, June 27th at 1:00PM at the cemetery. The public is invited to attend.

Now will the rest of the renovations to the cemetery be started? It would be a shame to have that beautiful memorial adorning the cemetery which badly needs help. It is difficult to walk across the older part because of the uneven ground. The plan that was presented several years ago primarily dealt with the lower levels, but the upper level needs work to make it more safe for people to get from one side to another. You could easily twist an ankle just trying to get to a trash container or water source.
