Yes, there is some fusion of hydrogen nuclei, as evidenced by the fact that neutrons resulting from the fusion are detected. But that's nothing new and is not the goal of the current efforts. The goal is to achieve "Ignition", which means reaching a condition where there are so many fusion events and so much energy being released that it heats up the rest of the hydrogen fuel even more and the fusion reactions become self-sustaining even without any further energy input from the lasers.

Design, Engineer and build a working FUSION reactor.
PURE HYDROGEN as fuel.
Direct to electricity.
3 Billion degrees.
NO reason we cannot do this now.
NO EXCUSES.
