A two-alarm fire destroyed a second-floor apartment and damaged at least one other Friday night in an eight-unit apartment complex at 1302 Hopyard Rd.

Firefighters from the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department extinguished the blaze that was believed caused by burning grease on a stove in the damaged apartment, but not before it burned into the apartment building’s attic.

In addition to fire damage to an adjacent second floor apartment, water and smoke also damaged several apartments on the building’s first floor, with a total of 16 tenants displaced.

Battalion Chief Paul Lagasa said the fire was reported at 8:30 p.m. with eight fire vehicles responding from both his department and Alameda County Fire.

Pleasanton Weekly photographer Jay Flachsbarth, who was on the scene shortly after the fire broke out, said the “quick work of the joint response” of the two fire departments kept the blaze from spreading through the attic and entire building.

The Red Cross was called to assist those who were displaced.

  1. Just more Pleasanton employees standing around. Glad everyone is ok and would like to thank the Red Cross Volunteers (Hero’s). For my Brotherhood, nice but really 8

  2. Union protections guarantee a lot of standing around. We see it in teachers. Fire “workers” are no different. Fire science shows we don’t need fire departments. Just another way to gouge the public.

  3. So you don’t think you need firefighters in this town? You can say that until your house catches fire or you get in a car accident. I agree, they make too much money in California and are hiding behind pension plans that break most city budgets. But a job that is appreciated.

  4. Thank you firefighters…please ignore the idiots above as they have never done anything brave in their entire entitled life…you guys are worth every penny and more…keep up the good work!

  5. The morons Weakly and Right obviously have no clue as to what a firefighter does. Who do you think is the first responder when you call 911?? It is the fire department. They help save lives in addition to putting out fires. Thank you Firefighters for all that you do! Until you have worked a day in their shoes, then keep your mouth shut and stop complaining about how much money they make.

  6. If it was up to me, I’d have you retire at age 25 with full pay and benefits, rather than age 50! You are my eternal heroes, and if you take a year off on work comp from time to time, so be it! You deserve it! If all you haters think its easy to sleep at the firehouse every night, try it yourself! These taxpayers are just jealous of your fitness because they could not do your job.

  7. They have to send that many firemen/fire trucks because it involved a multi-dwelling building. You would be amazed how fast that fire could have spread to the other apartments and if they did not have the manpower and trucks there, it could easily have turned into a disaster with possible injuries and/or fatalities.

  8. This complex is one of the “illegals” havens in PTown. Expect more of these events to take place when the low-cost housing goes in.

  9. “Tom F.” and “Crusty Nads” … shameful racism.

I, for one, am grateful that my taxes go to something as critical and beneficial to our community as our First Responders.

  10. FYI-it is not a 8 unit apartment complex but rather 8 apartment in one building. there is a difference. as for all you morons thinking the bad-white people that own homes have grease fires too

  11. Well John, it’s like this. First, I have no shame about my racism and prejudices. I don’t buy into the One World crappola. My bigotry is mice nuts compared to the bigotry from the Asians, both northern and the sub-continent. I know these people. I have lived in their countries. They hate like no other. How do you think Mr. and Mrs. Wong react if little Suzie brought Tyrone home to meet the them and grandparents? “Ballistic” immediately comes to mind. As for the sub-continent folks, Little Rashmi won’t be bringing Tyrone home to meet the parents and grandparents. No. Her marriage has already been re-arranged since she was in diapers. This is the new American culture.

P-Town is looking more and more like Fremont everyday and it’s not a good thing.

  12. Truth, I am in the Business and can tell you 8 is way to many.We are the first ones because of the way dispatch works. We pretty much only know how to hold IV bags.Pleasanton needs to have Paramedic/Firefighters and stop treating every fire like a training call.We would be fine with half volunteers.

  13. Volunteers? NOT!

Perhaps all registered voters in Plutonia be assigned rotations. That way, all registered voters would have an opportunity to serve their community, save lives/property, and help out the Fire Department.

Cholo…that’s a waaaaaaay cool idea but I doubt that concerned Plutonians would bother to show up!!! tee hee hee…tee hee hee…hahahahahahahahaa

    signed,

    anony

  14. so glad you live in livermore, cholo. Thanks for staying there and for your continued ‘concern’ for OUR city.

  15. a big fire…watch out…store your valuables…buy a new car and drive off into the sunset…sparks fly so out of hotels to close to your homes…there’s a sale on pork chops ‘n raising…buy a ton…hurry hurry the sale ends soon!!!

    but wait…if you can’t fight a fire with water…what cha gonna do…NADA!

  16. I, for one, have had nothing but positive experiences, even when the cops pulled me over. Legitimate reasons, and they were courteous, helpful and articulate. My house hasn’t burned down, and years ago I recall calling 911 when a water main had busted on July 4th (street in front of my house was giving way under weight of myself) and they were out in minutes. DPW were out within the hour, huge hole dug and pipes repaired. Yes, I like that sort of thing.
