What I have casually observed is they leave from Shadow Cliffs in the morning and, at least some of them, land in the fields behind Pleasanton Middle School, and then they return to Shadow Cliffs in the evening. Water, food, water? From National Geographic, "Canada geese are adaptable to many habitats and may thrive wherever grasses, grains, or berries are available." If you are ever near Hearst Elementary, I've seen cutouts of coyotes (?) that might be used as a deterrent to their landing. Just a guess, though.

The San Francisco Bay area is home to a large non-migratory population of Canada Geese.
The Canada Geese you saw in flight(skein), were probably headed towards the east end of the Sports Park. They seem to favor this area in the morning.
I have seen large gaggles at Sunol golf course, Lake Elizabeth in Fremont, and Ed Levin County Park in Milpitas.
They are beautiful to look at in flight, but on the ground they make a lot of poop.

The geese are in pairs while they nest, and then in family groups while they raise their young. They remain in small family groups until the young geese learn to fly and grow to maturity.

In late July, through August, and into September the family groups join together into larger groups feeding together in preparation for their Fall migration . At this time you'll occasionally see local flocks that can number in the hundreds. (About 500-600 on many mornings feeding in the field on the South side of Bernal across from the Fairgrounds.)

A local problem is that the majority of our geese simply don't leave -- they just group up and stay here where the weather is fairly mild and we have plenty of food. They can be messy and a nuisance to some. However, I always stop when I hear a flock of geese approaching and soon I'm watching them fly overhead -- Their call is one of Nature's greatest sounds.

The geese eat at the field across from the fairgrounds on Bernal and then they fly over town, right past my window, and go to the quarry lakes at Shadow Cliffs.

I love seeing and hearing the geese too, but beware when you look up! They sometimes poop in my yard as they fly over 😝

There is a large flock in Bishop Ranch. Some seem to stay year round at the AT&T complex. They do make a mess. It is nice once the chicks hatch. Traffic stops for them to cross the street

When I was growing up in NW Montana the fall migration of these geese through our valley numbered in the tens of thousands. Our farm had about 300 acres of ponds and wetlands. They would schedule their movement south for a layover at our farm. One year they arrived before we had harvested the grain. They stripped us clean. I went from field to field firing my shotgun and that would move them about 300 yards to a fresh spot.

I love their sound and it gives me goosebumps (sorry) to see them fly overhead at easy shotgun range.

I see geese at the back of Donlon school in the morning. Makes me sick when I see children playing soccer there on the weekends. Can't imagine what they step in. When school is in some children are actually playing on the lawn during recess.

Thanks for postings - I learned a few things I didn't know! Something I did know, thanks to my Canadian relatives, is that they actually are "Canada Geese", as un-gramatical as that sounds. As I was told: "They don't actually have citizenship" : )

I love these geese-it's called mother nature. maybe some of you should look into it.

Mother Nature is awesome. Get off your ipads, laptops etc and enjoy life outside without technology once in a while. you might even enjoy it and learn something.

I love the geese! Yes they make a mess and are not so friendly if approached but Their flight formations are beautiful to see and i always stop to hear their exuberant honking. I get the sense they have a supportive and thriving community and they look healthy and comfortable in our local surroundings. So glad they grace us with their presence!

I suppose we're lucky to have them. I've been here 12 years and I still look up when they fly over our house, which is every morning and afternoon. We had a couple repair people at our house last week, and one guy went outside when he heard them coming, and then called his co-worker out to watch. He thought it was great (so I guess he didn't get pooped on).

There is a great movie from a few years back called "Winged Migration". Beautifully done and one learns so much about the migration habits of our feathered creatures. Worth watching. I will never look at a Canadian goose the same way again after viewing.

I like geese. I saw some when I was growing up. I like puppies and kittens too. And bunnies.

Do these Canadian geese have the proper documentation, or are they taking advantage of California's loose immigration enforcement?

They fly over my house almost every day, very low. They are not much higher than my house.It's about 5:30 every day.

Being on vacation from the UK, it is uncanny to see them overhead at approximately the same time every day.
