What part of the $24-billion-and-growing state budget deficit and public agony over harsh cutbacks in services to the needy does our dysfunctional California state government not understand? As unemployment rises in the private sector and cities and counties freeze hiring and start furloughing some of their employees, the state payroll keeps growing. Except for a civil engineer needed for specialty work on several projects in the pipeline and a new city attorney to succeed Michael Roush, who will retire next month, the city of Pleasanton hasn't hired any new employees since last year. We all know the situation in our school district, where several hundred positions have been eliminated and programs cut due to shortfalls in state appropriations to education. Yet the state government keeps adding people and positions--by one report nearly 4,000 new jobs for a gain of just under 1 percent while private industry cut nearly 800,000 jobs.

Hosterman and Thorne dispatched from Pleasanton to fix a dysfunctional state government?!?! Hosterman expresses outrage at Haggerty's b-b-q? These folks are part of the problem. With any "solution" from these business-as-usual politicians we will have more of the same - just the faces will be different. What a laugh!
