Litter at Sports Park skate park

Original post made by Michelle, Parkside, on Mar 3, 2007

I am rather disgusted at the litter that seems to build up at the skate board park. There are at least 3 trash cans that the skateboarders can use to throw out their litter. Can we close this section of the park or fine the people littering until they learn to put their trash were it is suppose to be? I have younger children and they are commenting about it all the time. This is a public space and all who use it should be able to enjoy it, not cringe at the litter surrounding the area. I end up picking up a lot of the trash instead of spending time with my children enjoying the skateboard area.

I have actually done some skateboarding in my day and I love it. Today's kids refer to their "freedoms" and whatnot when they skate, but not their responsibilities. And I'm afraid its the parents' fault. Pleasanton has way too many spoiled kids who wouldn't pick up a piece of garbage, noting that "there's someone to do that job." Well its their job, so all of you lowlife parents (who do the same thing) cut it out and teach your kids some REAL values.

You are absolutely correct. Had to navigate thru the broken bottles on path next to it couple of weeks ago. I've picked up the trash as well but it only seems to make it worse. Could try signs with a message but not so sure that the perpetrators are bright enough to understand.

The City, like good parents, should take action and deliver ramifications to kids who don't behave or follow the rules. I encourage City staff to consider fencing off the skate park with a sign saying the park is closed because of excess littering.

My kids play soccer and baseball in Sports Park and despite the park being packed with players and parents ALL DAY on Saturdays, they get their trash in the cans. I challenge anyone to find ANY trash on ANY baseball, softball or soccer field in Sports Park by dark. The difference between the two parks is that parents attend and watch football, soccer and baseball - they don't watch their teens skate, so teen do what teens do - they litter, spit, and act like idiots in public places because adults aren't watching them.
