He had been booked into the Contra Costa County jail last Wednesday on suspicion of weapons crimes, resisting arrest and a probation violation, according to the sheriff's office.
Lee said the death is under investigation by the sheriff's and district attorney's offices, as is standard protocol in such cases.
Mr. Behiel's family were to be at Graham-Hitch Funeral Home in Pleasanton to meet mourners and for a viewing from 6-8 p.m. Thursday.
