Tri-Valley woman returns from deep sea exploration
During Runyan's time on the Nautilus, scientists were primarily studying the numerous hydrothermal vents in the Gulf of California. Hydrothermal vents occur at underwater fissures in the ocean crust, when seawater meets magma, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Because of the great depths at which they occur, they are studied and observed through the use of remote operating vehicles (ROV's) and associated machinery, like that pictured here.
