These are the Pleasanton Weekly’s endorsements for the June 7 primary.
These recommendations cover only local races on the ballot. The Weekly is not making endorsements in the presidential or U.S. Senate contests, although we are endorsing U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Dublin) for re-election in the 15th Congressional District.
Vote Yes on Measure K. A Yes vote affirms the action of the City Council last January in approving a 43-home development on the 194-acre Lund Ranch II site in the southeast corner of the city and closes out 14 years of debate that at one time proposed more than 100 homes. As part of the agreement, Greenbriar Homes Communities, the developer and property owner, will donate 177 acres of its property to the city as open space, which will be kept free of any future development in perpetuity with hiking trails to be added.
For 7th State Senate District representing Pleasanton, we endorse incumbent Steve Glazer, a Democrat, over challengers Tyson “Guy” Moore, also a Democrat, and Joseph A. Rubay, a Republican. Glazer has proven to be a maverick centrist Democrat who proposes and votes on legislation based on issues, not party politics.
For 16th State Assembly District representing Pleasanton, we endorse incumbent Catharine Baker, a Republican, over former Pleasanton City Councilwoman Cheryl Cook-Kallio, a Democrat. In her first term, Baker has consistently pursued bipartisan decisions, emphasized education as the gateway to opportunity and worked to empower local decision-making rather than state mandates.
For Alameda County Supervisor, District 4 that covers Pleasanton, we endorse incumbent Nate Miley over challenger Bryan Parker. Miley works closely with Pleasanton city, civic and business leaders on issues of mutual interests, such as widening Highway 84, building BART to Livermore, Happy Valley and the proposed development of a convention center and hotel on the fairgrounds.
For Zone 7 Water Agency board of directors’ three available seats, we recommend incumbents Sandy Figuers and Angela Ramirez Holmes and challenger Eric Thiel among the seven candidates. Figuers’ geological knowledge is unmatched on the ballot. Ramirez Holmes’ knowledge of the political industry gives her a larger view of Zone 7’s place in statewide debates. Thiel, a challenger and Amador Valley High biology teacher, will provide a fresh voice and valuable environmental perspective that is largely missing from the board.
