Bruce Buonauro will portray the now-sainted Father Junipero Serra tonight in the new year’s first “An Evening with…” Ed Kinney speaker series sponsored by Pleasanton’s Museum on Main.

The performance will start at 7 p.m. at the Firehouse Arts Center.

Miguel Jose Serra, better known as Father Junipero Serra, became the Father/President of the California mission chain early in the 1700s. This small frail man of modest background, soft spoken and untiring, would become a central figure in California’s history as the founder of the California Missions.

Buonauro, an active member of the Los Angeles Theatre community, will be portraying the icon Father. His fun and interactive presentation will provide the audience with historical information about Father Serra as well as insight into his life, personality, humor and humanity.

Buonauro has spent years reaching and honing his portrayal of Father Serra. He has visited most of the California Missions, and studied at length in their libraries. He has been entrusted with documents and manuscripts unavailable to the general public by the Brothers of the Missions.

He appears regularly as Father Serra at various California Missions including Carmel, Father Serra’s burial site. He has performed as a part of the educational programs for Mission San Juan Capistrano, and thousands of school age children each year through the venue of the Adventures in Education Program at Knott’s Berry Farm.

All events at the Firehouse Arts Center are general seating. Tickets are $10 general admission, $7 Seniors 65+ years old and students with a valid ID. Museum members pay $5.

  1. Oh, I cant wait to attend!! I am writing a paper on how the Native Americans were forced into Christianity. I have some great questions to ask Father Serra, like if he participated in the floggings or if he had others do it for him. I hope there will be a Q&A session so I don’t have to interrupt the show with questions.
