Crews are still working to restore service to roughly 5,400 PG&E customers in the Castro Valley area who are without power this morning due to poor weather conditions, a PG&E spokesman said.

Initially, nearly 7,800 customers were affected by the outage that began just before 10:30 p.m., and personnel have been dispatched to repair the failed equipment, PG&E spokesman J.D. Guidi said.

Guidi said that the outage was caused by heavy wind and rain.

Affected customers include residents of Hayward near California State University East Bay and Fairview, an unincorporated area of Alameda County, he said.

As of 6 a.m., there was no estimate for when power would be restored to the 5,458 customers still affected by the outage.

More than 40,000 customers were temporarily without power Tuesday night as storms rocked the San Francisco Peninsula, a PG&E spokesman said.

About 37,000 customers in Daly City and South San Francisco lost power at about 6:40 p.m., spokesman J.D. Guidi said. Power was restored at about 8:40 p.m. Another 5,185 customers also lost power at about 8:05 p.m. in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury neighborhood and Richmond District, Guidi said. Power was restored at about 9:10 p.m.

Guidi said the cause of the outages was still under investigation.

The loss of power coincided with wind and flood advisories in San Francisco as rain pounded the Peninsula. Up to four inches of rain were forecast across the Bay Area, along with wind of up to 55 mph and possible urban flooding.
