In a celebration of kindness, acceptance and inclusion Livermore is set to recognize a Unity Day celebration on Wednesday, a nationally observed event started in order to combat bullying wherever it is found.

Presented by the city of Livermore, Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District (LVJUSD) and Livermore Area Recreation and Park District (LARPD), Unity Day will see the aforementioned groups host a series of coordinated social media events for residents to participate in, all of which are geared toward combating an epidemic of bullying.

“According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, one out of every five students ages 12-18 report being bullied at school during the school year. Research has shown that promoting and modeling the behaviors of kindness, acceptance of difference, and inclusion creates healthier communities,” Livermore event organizers said in a statement.

“Unity Day offers an opportunity to address bullying prevention and kindness not just for school-aged children but for the community at-large,” they added.

All week long residents can follow one of the sponsoring groups’ social media pages to learn about anti-bullying events and activities.

To celebrate on Wednesday, participants are invited to wear orange and live by example, modeling kindness, inclusion and acceptance in their interactions with fellow members of their community — not just on Unity Day but throughout the year.

The community is also encouraged to make chalk art designs and post to social media using the hashtag #LivermoreUnityDay2020 throughout the week.

Finally, residents can help oppose bullying by taking the Unity Day pledge online at www.pacer.org/bullying/pledge.
