A tanker carrying several thousands of gallons of 99% ethanol crashed on southbound Interstate 680 near Koopman Road in unincorporated Alameda County early Wednesday morning, closing a lane of the highway for the majority of the day.
According to a series of posts on the Alameda County Fire Department’s Twitter page, the trailer — which contained more than 2,600 gallons of ethanol — was successfully drained without releasing any product into the environment at approximately 3 p.m.
The California Highway Patrol said the crash was reported at 2:49 a.m. at the Koopman Road off-ramp, which is also blocked, just north of the junction with state Highway 84.
Livermore-Pleasanton Firefighters IAFF Local 1974 added on their Instagram account that the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department and Cal Fire also responded to the crash.
