Tri-Valley Women’s March sees hundreds take the streets of downtown Pleasanton

Hundreds march and attend rally in support of equality, inclusion

On the second anniversary of the 2017 international Women’s March, hundreds of Tri-Valley residents gathered in Pleasanton to participate in the city’s first Women’s March, celebrating diversity, inclusion and the success of women locally and nationally.

Joining numerous other women’s marches throughout the country on Saturday, approximately 800 residents gathered at Amador Valley High School for the rally -- which took marchers through much of downtown Pleasanton -- to celebrate the many accomplishments for women over the past two years, while still acknowledging that the country has a long way to go in terms of achieving total equality and inclusion.

“What a great year 2018 was. We did that together. Every phone call we made, every door we knocked, every text we sent... we were the change we needed to be in this country,” Assemblywoman Rebecca Bauer-Kahan (D-Orinda) said at a rally that preceded the march. “It was great to watch it all come together, but as we look towards 2020, I want to urge you to continue to march, to continue to speak, to continue to fight, for all of our values … When we vote our values we win.”

At the rally, a series of speakers acknowledged the trials of women nationally and locally, but did not neglect the many hard-earned achievement made by women in a relatively short amount of time.

After the Nov. 6 election, women currently make up nearly a quarter of the 116th Congress voting membership, the highest percentage in U.S. history, according to the Pew Research Center. That's approximately a 5% uptick from 2016 figures.

Even regionally, women have taken a larger role in civic governance winning a plethora of elections throughout the East Bay, said Kyoko Takayama, event organizer and OFA East Bay Central representative.

“Even in the Tri-Valley we have had more women in the city councils and local government (than ever before) and we are pushing that to be continued. It's a sign ‘OK we got this we can do this even better,’” Takayama said.

“We are trying to be more inclusive and diverse, which is a little more difficult because the minority community may not be coming out, but that's kind of what we are aiming for. We have diverse speakers (and) we hope that will be reflected with the marchers,” Takayama added prior to the event.

Public speakers at the rally boasted a cast of women from across the Tri-Valley who looked to exemplify the mission to promote diversity and inclusion.

“We will not be silent because we know that our own liberation is tied to the liberation of all others and that no one is truly free while another person remains oppressed,” said speaker Jessica Trubowitch, the public policy and community building director for the Jewish Community Relations Council.

Another speaker was Angela Vasquez, Las Positas College Inter Students Club chair, who spoke from her experiences as a self described dreamer and advocated for the support of undocumented students.

“My ultimate goal is to ensure that I have a voice for undocumented students all around campus because I’ve felt alone at some point... and I want to make sure that nobody else at Las Positas College thinks that they are alone just because of their status,” she said. “No person should ever feel like an outcast just because of where they came from.”

Other speakers featured at the rally included:

*Libby Galt -- Co-founder, Tri-Valley Women’s March Action Group.

* Mary Puthoff -- Lakota Tribe representing the local Ohlone, Yokuts and Miwok people.

* Alisha Shaik -- Women’s March Youth Empower 2019 Cohort, Las Positas College student and the rally’s emcee.

*Christine Dillman -- Sexual assault and counseling services director, Tri-Valley Haven.

* Marsha McInnis -- Co-founder, National Alliance on Mental Illness: NAMI Tri-Valley.

* Lylah Schmedel -- Las Positas Student Gov. president., Black Student Union representative.

The event had a variety of sponsors and organizations come together to make the march a reality including the Tri-Valley Women’s March Action Group, Livermore Indivisible, Students for Social Change and OFA East Bay Central.

During the march, organizers also promoted the Women’s Expo being held in front of the Amador football field, where a series of stands were placed providing women with resources and information on how to get involved politically.

The Tri-Valley Women's March also stressed the importance of including a younger generation of women in the process as early as possible. Ensuring just that, organizers were aided greatly by the efforts of Foothill High freshman Lily Mobraaten, who led the event's social media accounts and engaged in public outreach.

“There are so many important stories to be heard from people of different cultures and backgrounds and I really want people to unite because we are stronger together,” said Mobraaten, who also represents the youth advocacy group Students for Social Change.

“I think it's really important to get more youth involved. It's our future and I want us to get involved early so we can start making change and learning,” she continued, adding that she was very impressed with the number of her peers participating in the march.

It was great seeing some major political and social activism happening in Ptown. The marchers got a big thumbs up and solidarity-car honk from me as I passed them on First Ave!

While I applaud these ladies for getting out to voice their solidarity, I would have a much higher regard if they were honest in their real intent & focus and just call themselves "Never Trumper Gals" In speaking with two "lovely" slightly angry young ladies all I was spewed with was a foul mouthed barrage of obscenities & personal assaults on "selling out to toxic masculinity"

I weep for the youth...

I am truly concerned for my Country and my grandchildren. I am a woman but I have never agreed to what is being spewed out there. I don’t hear any truly intelligent conversations going on, rather they are carrying on on how horrible Trump is (which I disagree), how they deserve free education (no you don’t, you choose the school and know the expenses before entering, really it’s all about them not getting their way.

I agree with Joyce.

We need these extreme liberals to quit tearing our Country down

While I completely agree that women need to stand up for ourselves, I am saddened by the nasty way it’s being done. Push for reproductive rights, without having to wear a silly hat or carry a crude poster. Say “no” to men who make you feel less than. Be without a man instead of settling. What happened to self responsibility? The next generation wants it all handed to them. Remind our children that we have to learn before we can rule. We messed up as parents when we went along with the “everyone’s a winner” garbage. Wake up, people! We are in charge of our community - not the numb-nuts that we’re somehow elected!

"I am saddened by the nasty way it’s being done." As said in reaction to basically every push for rights ever. We glorify MLK today but he was a radical. He blocked bridges. John McCain, Orrin Hatch, and Chuck Grassley voted against making his birthday a holiday over 15 years after his death. Web Link

The cost of housing, healthcare, and education have soared while both median and intro wages for young people have stayed flat or gone down, our property taxes are higher because we haven't been protected by prop 13 for 20 years, and our social security will pay out less when we retire, but we want it "all handed to us?"

Please.

To those saying it’s being done in a nasty way, we’re you there? No, you weren’t, because if you were, all you would have seen was respectfulness and solidarity. You also would have seen many many men. How can anyone be against advocating for policies that support women? You don’t think we have no more work to do, do you? If you think we have further to go but don’t like the way the message is being presented, then offer up something besides criticism. It’s easy to say something is wrong, what’s hard to saying how to make it better. Also, if you were there you would have seen many signs about many issues that impact women, not just signs denouncing trump.

I wish there could be a conversation that allowed both sides to air their thoughts and reasons behind them. AND HAVE A CONVERSATION, I was so scared to discuss my views when we lived in ca for fear of what would happen to our kids. This is a large reason why I talked with my husband (a white male) and decided to move out of cali to help protect our white blonde son (who tested GATE in CA-not that that made a difference in Ptown) from the stereotyping him and discriminating against him and his sister due to their 50% heritage that they no part of. The other 50% heritage is Mexican but you wouldn't know it by their looks because part of our family came from Spain which has blonde and green eyed people. What is more toxic than "masculinity" is denying that the women's march is just as toxic, but viewed as OK. I know there will be trolls who scrutize my comments as you are just as toxic. It is time to have a conversation and not just assume all are in the same agreement as you. Ptown is changing quickly

@"I was there, were you",

From what they typed above, they weren't there, but are just going by what they saw on right leaning commercial media outlets and websites. It is good to information, news, and editorial commentary from multiple sides on issues, but people seem to be increasing inclined to only look for things that make them feel comfortable in their opinions.

It is even better to see things with one's own eyes.

As to tearing down Trump, here's a good one coming from a conservative commentator.

Young people were the ones flocking to candidates like Bernie Sanders and Barack Obama promoting big government/socialist style "free" programs (college, child care, health care, etc.) and "income equality" (class envy) via higher taxes on the rich/more regulations on businesses - so things would be "fair". None of these "progressive" policies will result in more higher paying jobs, lowering costs, or keeping more of what you earn.

I'm missing the "small government" thing with 2 years of Republicans running the Congress and the White House and 750+ billion dollar deficits. I think it is time for Republicans to drop the "big government" criticism of Democrats if they can't do anything to control their own spending.

Unfortunately some people just want to bury their head in the sand/are still in denial. Anyone hearing Obama tell Joe the Plumber we needed to "spread the wealth around" in 2008 - and then blaming the "1%" for people being economically worse off should have known things were not going to turn out well.

We need to go back to the FDR days when the marginal tax rate was 94%. The rich were still rich and we got a few big projects done in this country which helped populate the west and make a lot more of this country habitable. And if you think that 94% applies to you....congratulations for having an income of more that 10 million/year. You'll be just fine.

I love these marches in our streets and can't wait for this young generation of women to take control of this country!!!

By the way, Joe the Plumber was unemployed at the time he spoke to Obama so the higher taxes would certainly not apply to him. Just another loser on govt assistance, aka Trump voter.

Why don't you lead by example and send 94% of your own income to the government? Or are you just one of those so called progressive people that want things to be provided for them for "free" - but have someone else earn the money to pay for them? Just what we do not need.

Robert,
Go look up what the effective tax rate was for those who qualified for that highest bracket - it was effectively around 40% due to several loopholes. Additionally government trust was high (er) then and people actually got something in return for their taxes....besides supplemental bills for retirement funds.

Glad to see you made this thread about you instead of what it’s meant to call attention too - women uniting and celebrating a significant shift in thinking about what it means to be a woman in society/industry/business/home/etc. these are positive events, there will always be a vocal faction that focuses on politics over the event substance

If you bothered paying attention you might learn something. Obama's "spread the wealth around" and "you didn't build that" economic plans resulted in one of the worst economic recoveries coming out of a recession. Keep making a fool out of yourself by claiming the "rich" paying more taxes/government trying to rig the results would have somehow made a difference.

It requires little or no thought to complain it's not "fair" that someone earns/has more than someone else. But some people have simply never grown up and hate individual accomplishments.

Stock market more than doubled under Obama. Unemployment went from 10% to 5%. Recovery from the edge of the cliff where Bush jr took it was awesome. I made a ton of money, so did a whole lot of people I know.

So you think Jeff Bezos actually "earns" 250 millions/day? That's right, 250 million/day while his minimum wage employees urinate in bottles because they don't have time to go to the bathroom and sleep in tents and in cars because they can't afford a place to live. I live in a house said to be worth 1 mil. Bezos can afford to buy my whole neighborhood EVERY DAY, 250 houses, free and clear.....no loans. EVERY DAY!

That's the world we're living in. I'm not ok with that. If his employees were doing well I'd be ok with it. As it is, I say tax the heck out of Bezos and people like him!!!!! And even if we did, he'd still be crazy rich.

@MichaelB,

Republicans lost even more credibility when they bailed out AIG with $182 billion of tax payers money after AIG ran itself out of business in derivatives speculation. Speculators at AIG suffered no consequences and were even awarded for their failures.

Not exactly free market without government interference.

Robert,
Yes, Bezos does earn $250 million per day. He started with an online book store that has grown to disrupt every industry it touches. When you do that, yes, you earn what the market will pay you.
If you think the hourly warehouse employees are making decisions on the strategic investments the company makes, then youre right, they deserve more. But theyre not. But in addition to their hourly wage, benefits, etc they also get espp and stock.

Now its interesting you picked Bezos, definitely one of the most dominant in industry....kind of like a president in many ways. Now Bezos is continuing to pay and reward employees with stock as the company does well. Now Obama is surely going to cash in his post presidential years (as he should be allowed to), did he alone achieve that level of success and earn the rewards that are going to come as a result? Is he paying out "stock" to those that executed on decisions that got him to where he is? Seems politicians get to "retire" with a pretty nice campaign fund, book deals, speaking deals, etc. What of those that helped them get that level of achievement?

There are anti-trust laws still on the books going all the way back to the 1890s which, had they been enforced, would have prevented your "disrupter friend" from destroying every mom and pop shop. But they haven't been enforced since Reagan took office so now we have monopolies, duopolies, and monopsonies only, in just about every field. Little guy no longer has a chance and every small business is getting squeezed out of business or forced to sell out to the Big boys.

Predatory pricing, price fixing, etc are rampant and nobody is doing anything about it.

Robert,
Government is the only unchecked monopoly I can think of. Also, where is it written that preservation of "mom" and "pop" shops must continue unchanged, without adapting to industry and global changes. Look no further than automotive in the 80s. Union protectionism and ignorance to investments in quality at less expensive prices. But hey, if you want to continue to rattle off rhetoric, go for it.

By the way, those laws made it on the books because people shed blood for freedom from dictatorships and taxation without representation. Ask the taxpayers today if they feel they are happy with the application and use of their tax dollars, if they are getting value for that fee. How many houses have we built lately? How many new schools do we have? What's been the increase in tax revenue from home sales over the last 10 years - how many new roads do we have?

I was in Sacramento, the representatives their were talking about a revenue windfall and the need to spend it on new programs.....really? Starting new programs vs really shoring up those in existence that need refreshed or cancelled all together? They're addicts - spend today what you won't have tomorrow, we can always raise taxes, pass bonds, recover costs through rate payers..... Once we get the public hooked....

@PP,

Many people are happy with Social Security and Medicare, and at the federal level that is where the bulk of tax dollars are spent.

Hi BobB -

I think you are correct - most people are happy with Social Security and Medicare.

A few more years and I'll be able to sign up and get a good foundation for my retirement.

One thing that concerns me is CA talking about taking our Medicare dollars and spending them on a single payer systems for all of CA.

Curious what yours and other's thoughts are on this. I'm worried.....

PP,

What are you talking about??? Are you confusing 1890 with 1790? Get a better answer together if you want to stay in this conversation.

"Stock market more than doubled under Obama. Unemployment went from 10% to 5%. Recovery from the edge of the cliff where Bush jr took it was awesome. I made a ton of money, so did a whole lot of people I know."

More left wing babble. Obama had nothing to do with "fixing it". Economies eventually recover from recessions and the recovery should have been stronger. Strange how you now want to go back to the same spend/tax/regulate nonsense that didn't work to deliver economic growth.

I guess we just need more people unemployed and on food stamps to bring down the "rich" so you can feel good doing it. The "rich" already pay the bulk of the income tax burden already. So what does that say that you want them paying even more? Another apologist for the "you owe me" mentality.

People like you wanting to micromanage the economy while taking more from people who earn and giving to those who do not - and then calling it "prosperity". Get a better answer than income and wealth somehow being "rights", someone doing well is "stealing" from the poor, and that government always "knows" what is best.

Now that the shutdown is over, will we be seeing less posts from Robert Adam now that he is back to work?

Oh wait - government worker - easy job - get to goof off because you can't be fired - guess he can still use work time to continue his posts.

And I'm wondering - aren't most of the government workers going to get back pay - they've just missed a couple of pay checks - so that means they get paid for sitting at home?
