Pleasanton Preps: Foothill boys tennis starting season strongly

Amador Valley girls lacrosse 'meshing so well' early on

The Foothill Falcons, the defending East Bay Athletic League boys tennis champion, returned to action this month with a 7-0 win over Washington.

Since then, the team has played four league matches, as well as a pair of tournaments. The Falcons finished third in the 16-team James Logan Invitational, defeating Irvington and Amador Valley and losing to the eventual tournament champion, host James Logan.

The Falcons then traveled to Fresno to play in the 109-team California Classic Tournament. Foothill played in Division 1 and finished 2-2, losing to Homestead of Sunnyvale and Menlo School on Friday and coming back on Saturday to defeat Redwood of Marin County and Archbishop Mitty of San Jose.

In EBAL play, Foothill is 4-0 after defeating Dublin 8-1, Livermore 9-0, Granada 7-2 and Amador Valley 5-4.

Amador girls lacrosse

Senior Sadie Grozier led the Amador Valley girls lacrosse team to victory over Redwood last week, scoring six goals in the Dons' 17-5 win.

Freshman Bella Mayo also put up big numbers with five goals and multiple assists.

"I am so happy with how many new players we have on varsity," Amador head coach Chelsea Randel said. "The team is meshing so well. I am pleased with the team chemistry and how much fun we are having. The games we are playing are full team efforts."

The Redwood goalie was a tough defender and stopped many goal attempts by the Dons. But in the end, the Dons' ability to control the ball paved the way for a convincing victory.

Foothill baseball

The Foothill varsity baseball team scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat Freedom 5-4 in Oakley last week.

Foothill's pitching allowed only one earned run. In the biggest play of the game, Foothill catcher Jeremy Lea picked off the tying run at first base with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. Foothill's Owen Camp went 3-for-4 at the plate.

Foothill then came back two days later and won 9-0 against Mission San Jose. Brett Hansen, James Kroll and Logan Caton pitched a combined one-hitter. Jeremy Lea, Jake Simons and Sam Zevanove each went 2-for-3 at the plate in the game, which boosted Foothill's record to 4-0-1.

Foothill boys golf

Foothill hosted De La Salle and California for a dual match at Callippe Preserve Golf Course last week as the Falcons' home course -- Castlewood Country Club -- was still under repair from the weather.

The Falcons shot a respectable 191 but lost their first match of the season to De La Salle, who fired a 187. The Falcons did salvage a win over California 191-214 and improved their record to 5-1. Seniors Raj Chekuri and Alex Chin led the Falcons, each posting a 1-over-par 37.
