Pleasanton police arrested a Castro Valley man early Tuesday morning after they allege he damaged turf at Ken Mercer Sports Park by driving around on the wet sports fields in a pickup truck.
Imran Meskienyar, 21, was booked into the Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of felony vandalism, and the city of Pleasanton plans to seek restitution for the cost to repair the damaged grass, according to Pleasanton police Sgt. Brandon Stocking.
Police responded to the Sports Park at 5800 Parkside Drive around 1 a.m. Tuesday after a resident called to report a pickup driving through the park, Stocking said.
Arriving officers spotted a dark truck driving in circles on the sports fields, and after apparently noticing the police, the driver turned off the pickup's headlights and briefly tried to flee the area, according to Stocking.
Officers quickly caught up to the truck, at which point the driver -- later identified as Meskienyar -- decided to yield, the sergeant said.
"Large portions of the turf in the Pleasanton Sports Park were found to have been damaged by Meskienyar driving his pickup recklessly on the wet grass," Stocking said. The full cost of the damage hasn't been determined.
Stocking credited the resident who called police to report the suspicious activity at the Sports Park – which, like other Pleasanton city parks, are closed to the public after dusk unless it is lit for a sanctioned event.
"This is a great example of proactive community members and the police working together to maintain the safety and quality of life enjoyed in Pleasanton," he added.
