Special Veterans Day program at Las Positas College today

Public invited to free events featuring helicopter landing, talks by military historian, WWII veterans

Las Positas College will hold a special Veterans Day events today starting with a flyover of a Vietnam H2 Huey helicopter that will land in the parking lot in front of the Mertes Center on the campus between 9:45 and 10:00 a.m.

Then at 10 a.m., three speakers will take the main stage of the Mertes Center.

Brian Thompson, who works with the Military Service Department of Education in Washington, D.C., and is also a former history teacher, will discuss the European and Pacific Theaters in World War II, as well as the GI bill-then and now.

Thompson also served in the 82nd Airborne Division in Afghanistan.

Joining Thompson on stage will be two others who will talk about their experiences in World War II. They are John Shirley, an Army veteran who served in Europe during World War II and was a prisoner of war, and Mickey Ganitch, a Navy veteran who was aboard the USS Pennsylvania at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Las Positas College is located at 3000 Campus Hill Drive in Livermore.
