Local athletes combine for 10 medals at karate tourney


Five young students from Pleasanton-based Tri-Valley Karate earned 10 total medals at the Northern California Invitational Karate Tournament in Cupertino earlier this season.

Aditi Sharma led the way, winning gold medals in Kata (forms) and Kumite (sparring) in the girls 12-13 beginner/novice division during the May 17 event.

In the same division, Ramya Ayyagari took second in Kumite and third in Kata.

Neela Mandal won a pair of silver medals, one each in Kata and Kumite, for girls 6-7 beginner/novice.

Nitya Ayyagari earned bronze in Kata and Kumite for girls 10-11 beginner/novice.

In boys 12-13 beginner/novice, Yezzen Alrawi won a gold in Kumite and a silver in Kata.
