Congressman Eric Swalwell (D-Dublin) was selected by his Democratic colleagues Friday to become a regional whip for the upcoming 114th Congress.

Swalwell, who won his second straight term in the U.S. House of Representatives with almost 70% of the vote earlier this month, will serve as the Democratic whip for Region II, which includes Northern California, Hawaii and the Pacific Islands.

His duties will include working with House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Maryland) to build unity among House Democrats, informing his regional colleagues about upcoming legislation and mobilizing votes.

“I’m honored to continue being part of the Democratic leadership and thank my Northern California and Islander colleagues for entrusting me with this responsibility in the upcoming Congress,” Swalwell said in a statement. “I look forward to continuing to advance Democratic priorities that will support middle class families and lead to economic growth.”

Swalwell served as Democratic assistant whip in the 113th Congress.

“Eric has proven to be an effective member of Congress who has earned the confidence of his California colleagues,” said U.S. Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-San Mateo), chair of the California Democratic Delegation. “As Region II whip, he will continue to be an important part of our California delegation as he works to advance the Democratic agenda and serve our state.”
