BART fares to increase by 5.2% New Year's Day

Hikes to continue through 2020 to pay for new cars

BART riders will pay slightly higher train fares starting Jan. 1 to help pay for new train cars and other projects.

BART passengers will pay, on average, an extra 19 cents per ride to finance projects that BART officials say will ensure reliable, safe and clean train service for the Bay Area in the coming years.

The BART Board of Directors voted in February to continue BART's inflation-based fare increase program, in place since 2003.

The projects supported by the program will aim to replace and improve BART's "aging system." This includes purchasing Fleet of the Future train cars, a new train control system to improve reliability and to allow more trains to run more frequently, and the expansion of and improvements to the Hayward Maintenance Complex to serve the new fleet and support future service to Silicon Valley.

The inflation-based fare increase program means that predictable, but small changes to the prices are made, instead of larger increases with little notice, BART officials said.

The renewal of the program means that fare increases will continue every two years until 2020 and is expected to generate $325 million for the

new programs.

"BART is required to come up with a portion of funding for many of our capital projects in order to qualify to receive extra money from other sources," BART spokeswoman Alicia Trost said.

"BART must pay $800 million toward the cost of new rail cars," she saaid. "This fare increase will help us achieve that goal."

The first increase will be 5.2%, according to BART officials.

And of course, we need to make sure that BART janitors make more than Pleasanton teachers and that button-pushing train operators makes more than paramedics.

This rate increase will NOT go for new cars - it will go into the union employees pockets. The contract that is being negotiated by the BART board is going to suck up that increase in a second! The increases through 2020 are only going to pensions, benefits and wage increases. They will have to float more bonds to get the cars and equipment fixes that are required. Don't be stupid and believe this increase is for the benefit of commuters. At the very least support Steve Glazers efforts to get a No-Strike Ban through the legislature so that the actual commuters and payers are serviced - NOT THE UNION!

It is a shame that the BART union cares less about the riders and wants the riders to suffer financially. The good thing is the latest field poll shows a majority support from people in the Bay Area to not allow transportation unions to strike.

Forty-five percent of registered voters now believe that unions do more harm than good, compared to 40 percent who say they do more good. For the first time, more voters say these organizations do more harm than good.

There are 2 kinds of raises, cost of living, and your ability to increase efficiencies and therefore rewarded. Since the the raises were way beyond the cost of living, tell me again why the fares need to be increased. Increased efficiencies? you kidding me right?

Only idiots believed anything good would come from the new contract. When are we going to have the spine to stop these out-of-control PUBLIC unions??? There is no end to their greed and they know no limits.

Cholo, you're not in the 'REAL' world duking it out for survival. Many professionals still no longer have jobs. Today free-lance 'jobs' with no benefits, and of short duration is still common.(companies often use the misnomer 'contract', but there's no contract for that non-employee).
Greedy public unions are not part of this world, but consumers are. THAT Cholo is the 'economy'. You and the unions you support are not part of the very real NEW economy, which does NOT include Unjustified raises!!!!!

Sorry you're so bitter about what you refer to as the "REAL" world. It's unfortunate that a few "professionals" don't have jobs. How is that not my concern? If "professionals" won't accept work below their imagined worth, how is it anybody's problem but their own? Have any of the "professionals" considered working in the field of agriculture? As in working for a living wage in CA fields, perhaps following the crops, or as a domestic cleaning homes? It seems to me that lots of big homes in Plutonia need to be cleaned?

Working in the "REAL" world is not about your imagined worth. It's about finding/accepting a job and working. Incidentally, how "professional" is an unemployed individual? Have you considered dropping the word "professional"?
That simple act could be helpful in finding a job. Try it sometime!

Calling Union workers nasty names only allows some of the pros to feel comfortable with their own fantasy world. With the fantasy, they have the comfort of calling actual working folks names, blaming the working Americans for their lack of employment so that they delay actually working for a living.

Unions are here and they have no intention of surrendering for the likes of you because you are lazy and bitter. Working people earn the rewards. A cry baby "professional"...NOT!

Fares + bridge tolls increase (among other things) but the yearly wage I receive has remained flat for the pass 3 years.

I am able to neutralize the extra cost by walking to the BART station, but if they continue to raise fares, I will need to look into paying friends for a ride into SF. (Better to give the money to friends, then a over paid train operator/janitor/ticket agent)

Have any Americans considered increasing taxes on large corporations that make multi-billions and have slaves to powder their noses?

They could be taxed and the money diverted to cover the rising costs of r public transportation.

There are lots of new technologies and folks could receive incentives from the oil industry and reward original minds who come up with money saving ways that benefit the public transport needs.

If the billionaires only want to be greedy and shaft you, oh well...

not my cake!
