Big turnout for Pleasanton soldier returning from Afghanistan

City Council, veterans' organizations praise Army specialist with ribbons, commendations

About 75 family, friends and other Pleasanton well-wishers welcomed home Army Specialist Liberato Vallavicencio Saturday night.

Vallavicencio, who said his Army buddies had shortened his name to "V," said he was honored by the large welcome-home celebration, which came after he had completed his second tour of duty in Afghanistan. After a Christmas holiday break, he'll head to an Army base to complete his active duty early in 2011.

Among the many citations and special medals veterans organizations gave him was a special letter of commendation from the Pleasanton City Council, presented by Councilman Jerry Thorne.
