State unemployment drops to 12.3 percent in June

California's jobless rate continued to show very slight improvement in June, dropping another 0.1 percent to 12.3 percent, according to a report issued today by the state Employment Development Department.

The state unemployment rate was 12.5 percent in April and 12.4 percent in May.

California's unemployment rate was 11.6 percent in June 2009.

According to the EDD, most of the job losses in the past month were government jobs, primarily temporary federal census workers.

The EDD estimated there were 2,244,000 Californians without jobs in June.

The national unemployment rate also dropped in June to 9.5 percent.

Commenting on today's numbers, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger took the opportunity to call for the state to pass a budget "as quickly as possible" without raising taxes or "costs on the employers who will get our economy back on track," he said in a prepared statement.

"The road to economic recovery is long and difficult, and that's why it is so important that the state not hinder progress," Schwarzenegger said.

The nine-county Bay Area continued to fare better than the state average in June, according to the EDD report.

Marin County had the lowest unemployment in the region in June at 8.2 percent, and Solano County was highest at 12.2 percent. Unemployment was at 11.5 percent in Alameda County, 11.3 percent in Santa Clara County, and 9.6 percent in San Francisco.

The real UNemployment of total family members who are suffering....like not going to college, etc, etc. is much larger. A male relative of mine just went on unemployment last week....so his numbers won't be counted until the July report. His NORTH bay employer had 100 employees in Jan, shrank each month, to closing it's doors. NO $$ for employees, no loans or 'stimulus' for companies (of real workers). Stimulus is just for GREEN companies, unions, PUBLIC UNIONS, or minority projects, like 'inner-city' training for people who never worked in the first place...that's it ! Dems won't even let a tiny bit of stimulus be used for unemployment payment (they want to use new debt instead). It's all been used for Obama's AGENDA items.. So called stimulus is going to his 'agenda pets' like he always intended...he's just doing it with what he calls stimulus dollars....so he doesn't even have to 'sell' these half Billion $$ gifts, that he was always going to do anyway.
Aware, what's with the attacking Arnold for telling lousy legis to pass a budget without hurting EMPLOYERS...so they can hire the UNemployed?? Nothing wrong with that ! ! !

Jerry McNerney absorbs much of the blame for this in CA-11, complicit in Obama's takeover of GM which resulted in the closure of NUMMI. Jerry didn't show concern until Toyota pulled out.
It was then that Jerry realized this would result in, as he stated recently, up to 24% unemployment in his district. That caused him to realize this could hurt his re-election chances.

How is this Obama's fault? Last I checked we were in a recession before he took office. If you want to point the finger, point it at Reagan and the "Bush Crime Family" for deregulation. All of our jobs have been sent overseas. You can't call a helpdesk without getting someone from India. Also, the majority of what you own is made in China or Tawain. Not to mention 12 trillion spent for war #1, war #2, tax cuts for the rich and a broken Medicare part D. Critisize these Reps. for continuously blocking the proposed jobs bill.
