Pleasanton police officers arrested a homeless man Monday after witnessing him attempt to steal a car, police said Tuesday.

At about 10:09 p.m. Monday, a janitor working at 6930 Koll Center Drive in Pleasanton reported a man attempting to enter a locked vehicle, according to police.

The suspect reportedly forced the driver’s door of a brown Chevy Silverado pickup truck open but could not start the truck’s ignition before police showed up.

Spencer Thomas Finch, a 31-year-old transient from Union City, was sitting in the driver’s seat of the truck when police found him.

Finch was in possession of a backpack that contained tools used to open the car door and items stolen from inside of the vehicle, according to police.

Finch was arrested and charged with attempted auto theft, possession of stolen property and possession of burglary tools. He was booked

into Santa Rita Jail.
