Check out Activity Guide

The September-October Regional in Nature Activity Guide is included with this issue of the Pleasanton Weekly, listing activities of the East Bay Regional Park District.

The issue has a complete lineup of what's happening this fall in the district's 65 parks, including fall festivals. Its Healthy Parks, Healthy People feature focuses on Dong Yull Kim, publisher of Hyundae Korean News USA, a partner of the Park District, who is an active hiker in the regional parks.

Work for a congressman

Congressman Jerry McNerney has announced openings in both his Pleasanton and Stockton district offices for interns.

"I encourage students who have an interest in civics to apply for the positions in both of my offices. This is a great way to learn more about the government, and to give back to our community," McNerney said.

College and post-graduate students are encouraged to apply, and high school students will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Internships are designed to give students educational and professional experience. Although the internships are unpaid, the congressman's office will partner with institutions that offer academic credit for internships.

To apply to work in the Pleasanton office, students can mail or fax a cover letter and resume, Attention: Internship Coordinator, 5776 Stoneridge Mall Blvd., Suite 175, Pleasanton 94588; fax 737-0734. The telephone numbers are 737-0727 and 744-0727.

25 years for Pleasanton triathlon

Close to 1,000 triathletes will participate in the 25th annual Tri For Fun Triathlon Series tomorrow at Shadow Cliffs Regional Recreation Area with a 400-yard swim, an 11-mile bike ride and a 3.1-mile run. About 60% of the triathletes are first-timers, said Mark Aiton of On Your Mark Events.

Entry fee the day of the event is $75. Check-in and registration will begin at 5 a.m., with the first wave hitting the water at 7 a.m.

The series is having summer Tri for Fun events in June, July and August, which are timed but not competitive, followed on Sept. 16 with the Tri for Real competition, with increased distances.

Correction

The caption "Carrying the Torch" in the Aug. 10 issue should have said that Olympics torchbearer Sarah Williams attended Valley Christian Junior and Senior High School in Dublin.
