Man dead in apparent jump from West Dublin BART parking garage

BART police are investigating an apparent suicide this morning at the West Dublin/Pleasanton station.

"It came in as a guy hanging from the ledge of the garage," said BART Lt. Ed Alvarez. "We got the call around 5 (a.m.)."

Alvarez said the man either jumped or fell to the ground on the Dublin side of the structure. His name has been withheld and the Alameda County Coroner will be handling next-of-kin notifications.

"The investigation is still ongoing. Our detectives are working the case," Alvarez said.

Classic cars in town

Goodguys Rod & Custom Association is holding its 19th annual Summer Get-Together at the Alameda County Fairgrounds this weekend, with more than 2,500 classic American muscle cars and souped up hot rods on display.

A hot topic in the vintage car scene is the re-birth of the American muscle car, noted organizers, and the Get-Together is the place for car enthusiasts to enjoy those on display as well as participating in an AutoCross course. The weekend also offers automotive-themed activities for families, including youth racing on an oval track.

The Summer Get-Together is open 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. Saturday, and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. General admission is $17; kids 7-16 are $6; 6 and under are free. Parking is $8.

Library launches summer reading

The Pleasanton Public Library will unveil a lavishly constructed theme set for the 2012 Summer Reading Program on Saturday, June 9, based on the upcoming Summer Olympics. An Opening Day Torch Relay at 9:15 a.m. will go from Towne Center Books, 555 Main St., to the library at 400 Old Bernal Ave., where Books, the library mascot, will run the torch into the children's section to "light" an electric representation of the Olympic flame.

The free program, which runs through Aug. 4, will have fun activities and kids reading for the gold. The library needs students in grades 6-9 to volunteer to help run this program; helpers must attend one training session from those being held June 1, 5, 11 and 12.

An adult and teen program is being held June 9-July 31, with weekly drawings for prizes, stainless steel sports bottles for the first 100 people to turn in a reading log, author visits and other programs.

Firefighters run

The Livermore-Pleasanton Firefighters' Foundation has sold out its fourth annual Hook & Ladd Run that takes place Sunday morning to benefit injured and fallen firefights, the Burn Foundation and Tri-Valley nonprofit groups. The event will be headquartered at Wente Vineyards, 5050 Arroyo Road in Livermore. Both 5K and 10K run/walk courses begin at 8 a.m. and run through the Sycamore Grove Park in Livermore. The event also includes a kids 1-mile fun run, which starts at 9:45 a.m.

Clarification

The letter in the May 25 issue titled, "Thanks, Mom and Dad," should have stated that writer Dave Melander was one of the recipients of the 2012 Juanita Haugen Community of Character Awards.
