Making 'Lasting Memories'"Lasting Memories" will be made at Pleasanton's Parkview Assisted Living Home from Dec. 26-31, thanks to Christina Mitine. She is working on her Girl Scout Gold Award and decided to make a difference by engaging teenagers in her project to create memorable mementos for Parkview residents.
Looking for teens to form special bonds with seniors
"The Pleasanton community lacks programs involving interaction among teenagers and senior citizens," Christina explained.
She will have a four-day event of scrap booking, from 1:30-4:30 p.m. daily from Dec. 26-30, during which teenagers will assist Parkview seniors in designing personal scrapbook pages.
"Each page will mirror their most precious memories and allow all to see their once-in-a-lifetime experiences," Christina said.
The project will culminate with a Winter Senior Ball from 2-4 p.m. Dec. 31 where the teens and seniors will celebrate their new friendships.
Patricia Rawlings, activities director at the Parkview, happily agreed to assist Christina with this project, serving as her Gold Award Project Advisor, Christina reported.
"As a Girl Scout of 10 years, my goal for my Gold Award is to make a difference in the lives of valuable members of my community -- the seniors -- many of whom have not had the opportunity to engage with teenagers," Christina said.
She got to know her maternal grandmother when she lived with her family for seven years, plus Christina has volunteered at the assisted living home.
"I have created special bonds with the seniors," she said. "Watching my grandma pass away showed me the beauty of our relationship -- unique and worthy with pure happiness -- which has inspired me to take a stand and organize a bonding event."
"I intend to brighten up the days of elders through the formation of a new bond between teenagers and seniors," she added. "The more volunteers, the better."
