The year's most regrettable of the regrettable

Original post made by Gina Channell-Allen, president of the Pleasanton Weekly, on Jan 10, 2009

Most good journalists try to get things right and abhor corrections, clarifications and the like, particularly for what is considered a "stupid mistake."

The AFA change of "gay" to "homosexual" is not an "honest mistake." It's a deliberate effort to propagate discrimination.

Although the PW has not had any major-league bloopers to warrant nationwide attention/mirth, I do remember numerous typos and a few instances of questionable reporting from this past year which caused some comment here... (the one where the suspect with her hands handcuffed behind her back who wriggled her arms over her head was an interesting one).

If the PW is going to continue to be a reputable and first-class news organization, I'd hope that one of the New Year's resolutions would be to step up the proofreading and editing efforts, perhaps requiring reporters to have another reporter or editor proof the article before posting, at all levels of staff, cub to most senior.

Thanks, and keep up the good coverage of local events.

After poring over this column, I think you meant "pore over," not "pour over." :)

Funny you should write an article about "STUPID" mistakes and NOT mention your Home delivery paper in regard to the 9/11 mistake.

Did you tell Jeb that he made a STUPID mistake?

What's with the obsession with the word STUPID?

"STUPID posts not worth reading will be deleated" etc.
