Raley's Strike Set for Nov. 1st--Negotiations Break Down

From UFCW5

UFCW Int'l President Reaffirms

Strike Sanction at Raley's-Nob Hill:

Local 5 and Allied Unions to

Act on Company Provocation

At the meeting today (10-26-12) between Raley's-Nob Hill and the unions no progress was made to break the deadlock in bargaining created by the employer. In fact, the only thing the company did of any substance was to deliver a letter prepared earlier stating that we "have no additional proposals to make nor will we counter any proposals you (the unions) choose to make." In other words, they have had and have no intention of actually negotiating.

Accordingly, Locals 5, 8 and the international union are taking all steps necessary to resolve the issue. If an amicable settlement is not possible then all forces necessary to win a dispute will be marshalled.

Meeting Between Unions & Raley’s-Nob Hill Produces Nothing

Company Continues Path Toward Confrontation

International President Reaffirms Support for Membership

This message from President Ron Lind went out to Raley’s-Nob Hill members the evening of

October 26:

“As a direct result of your company’s recent actions and threats UFCW International Union

President Joe Hansen has confirmed that strike sanction has been granted against Nob Hill and

Raley’s Stores.

Let’s be clear – management’s ongoing campaign to force a vote on its so-called last, best and

final offer is a sham. The proposal on the table is worse than what you rejected in June by an

overwhelming margin and we have no reason to believe that your priorities and direction to the

bargaining committee has changed since that time.

After much prodding, your company finally agreed to meet today with the union bargaining

committee. Unfortunately, rather than getting back to the work of negotiating a new contract, the

company came to the table with a prepared letter informing us of its intent to unilaterally

implement its final offer on November 1.

Raley’s latest approach is a continuation of an ongoing pattern of bad faith bargaining and

attempted union-busting and its time to bring it to an end. We have instructed our attorneys

to file unfair labor practice charges against the company with the National Labor

Relations Board and to notify Raley’s that implementation of its final offer will result in a

strike.

We have been and continue to be willing to bargain with Raley’s for as long as it takes to reach

an agreement that we can recommend for your approval. Before that can happen, management

must abandon its take it or leave it attitude, and end it’s misguided and deceitful workplace and

media campaign. If the company commits to a collaborative approach that deals with its

documented troublesome financial condition while protecting the interests of our members, we

are confident that we will reach a successful outcome. In the meantime, we urge you to tell

management that you have already expressed your opinion on its offer. No means no.”

Sad, now some will likely have to be let go. Seems like at this time, something MIGHT be better than nothing.
