With Gov. Schwarzenegger declaring a fiscal emergency to reduce a looming $14 billion debt, this is clearly no time to vote for propositions 92 and 93, which are among the choices voters are asked to make in casting their Presidential primary ballots on Feb. 5 or by absentee ballots before then.

How low can you go? California's community colleges are already really cheap. Looking at Las Positas College for example, to receive an Associate in Arts or Science degree, a student must complete 60 semester units (Web Link). At $20 a unit, that's more or less a total of $1200 to get the Associate degree.

I agree with the editorial that Prop. 92 will definitely have adverse effects, namely sucking state funding out of other public institutions, such as CSU and UC.

Tell that to all of the big heads on the Board of Directors for the Community College District that give themselves raises, pay their retirees their same basic pay while on retirement, etc. Ask that Board WHY there is a need for a Dean for every department/sub-department on campus. Why don't you go on the school's Web site, see what the students are saying about these Deans and ask them WHY their tuition has gone up. They will have their answer and why there's a proposition on the ballot.

CA is in trouble. But there is a root to every weed. Those weeds are the Board of Directors for the Community College District.
