Differences in school district income for the area

Original post made by Resident, Another Pleasanton neighborhood, on Jun 12, 2013

There is a great spreadsheet online that shows how much each school district will receive with the proposed budgets and shows the difference the state gives to similar districts. Report is at: Web Link

Pleasanton Unified will receive $6786 per student in 2012/13
Dublin Unified will receive $6979 per student
San Ramon Valley Unified will receive $6,018 per student

That is a huge difference per student.
If Pleasanton received as much as Dublin we would have an additional $2.8M.
If San Ramon received as much as Dublin, they would have an additional $28M.

What I do not understand from the report is that Pleasanton will go from 6,786 per student now and then to 9,689 per student in 2020. That is a huge increase and don't see how there will be enough money for that, especially with the increase cost of the school pensions that has to be paid for.

Meeting that goal is next to impossible without a cataclysmic raise in taxes. This is the tsunami I've been warning us about. It has nothing to do with home values or tax revenues but everything to do with exorbitant salaries and pensions for public workers, including teachers, whose educations, frankly, do not warrant it. Even if they did, we still be caught in a poorly designed life raft with no paddles as an ever steepening wave of debt crashes above us. Don't believe what they tell you about increasing home values; and the market is notoriously unstable. It's all about overpaying our teachers.

I like old and reliable Arnold... Do you do events? I am sure you are a blast at parties. How many more tsunami posts until you get the platinum tea party pin?

Wow, thanks for the web link. I see what you mean. Haven't had time to digest, sounds like the wealthier districts will have to do more fundraising, uggghh, burned out, already.

I'm not sure how reliable your site is (looks as though it's a sharing website and not something that has been published by a reliable source), although I have heard that PUSD will receive less money per student if the new plan goes into place. I have to say, it's about time. For years lower income districts have received less money and it's time that they are supported. They should offer the best salaries in order to get the best teachers.

What will be interesting is how the high income districts will respond. Residents of Piedmont will continue to support their schools and deliver the most prepared students. Pleasanton, I'm not so sure about. Many parents tend to complain and don't understand education. I can easily see the best teachers wanting to move to where they are going to get paid - which will now be the lower income districts.

Should be interesting. I think it is an excellent change.
