Palo Alto moves to protect its retail businesses in its downtown block

Palo Alto officials turned back the zoning clock on an eclectic downtown block Monday night when they passed a law requiring property owners to devote ground-floor space to retail.

This is an area Pleasanton should revisit as well. A healthy and vibrant downtown core area is a huge attraction to residents and businesses that are thinking of locating here.

Having a core of retail businesses is key to vibrancy. Banks and other office buildings do not generate the vibrancy and foot traffic to support other retailers.

I applaud our council for limiting banks and do think it is worth looking at whether we should take further steps to help energy as well. I was pleased that some prospective Council members at the debate yesterday seemed to be open to this. I heard stong support and an action plan for protecting downtown from Kathy Narum and Olivia Sanwang - was disappointed to have not heard more commitment from Mark Hamilton or David Miller.

Our downtown is worth so much more than the tax evenues we get from these businesses. As Narum said, nothing says "small town more than our downtown" and we need to protect this asset.

Pleasanton should watch and see if Palo Alto is successful. The fear here is that property owners will lose their buildings because they aren't able to fill vacancies as they see fit. If Downtown districts belong to the community, then property owners, the community, and local government have to work together to provide a downtown that thrives. The footprint of Pleasanton's downtown is not large. If we forced ground floor office and primarily service uses to side streets, then the downtown district grows.

Agree with tough but good decision. Downtown really connects the pleasanton community and is what sets us apart from so many other neighboring towns. Would love to see some more restaurants and bars and less banks/nail salons. Places like Tully's and High Tech Burrito seem to do really well. Would love another lunch spot that would bring employees from Oracle, Kaiser, Clorox, Workday, etc. There a bunch of places in Santana Row where silicon valley emps go that I think would do really well in downtown Pleasanton: Plutos, The Counter, The Veggie Grill, Yard House, etc.
