Police at Foothill High this morning as investigation continues into 'shooting' threat

Original post made on Mar 12, 2013

Pleasanton police, plain clothes officers and school district security are swarming the Foothill High School campus this morning as the investigation continues into who posted a threat as graffiti in a girl's bathroom on campus about shooting up the school today.

I, for one, am not allowing my child to attend classes at Foothill until the Police know who made this threat. Whether the threat is real or not, I'm not willing to risk my child's life.

Heard from our daughter's friend they had the same thing happen in Tracy today. This smells very much like a hoax.

I don't have anyone going to Foothill, but if I did, I wouldn't send my children to school until this is resolved. What if it turned out not to be a hoax? Better safe then sorry. Someone knows who did this, so get to the bottom and full prosecution, nothing less.

Until this gets sorted out, I'm keeping mine home. It seems like the campus has been turned into a circus with all the news trucks parked right in the loop and extra police. Doesn't seem like an environment condusive for any type of learning. John Dwyer is stating things he cannot guarantee. He is assuring everyone of their child's safety if they go to school, but it's not like there is any way to detect if a student is hiding a firearm in a backpack. And with the number of students at that school, there's no way they can check them all. I know they want kids there so they get paid, but it's wrong for him to assure we parents of anything that he can't guarantee. I do think they should kick the media off school property and let them report from the sidewalk. For those kids that are there, they don't need reporters crawling all over the campus and a drop off loop full of news trucks.

We will be sending my son to FHS all this week and in the weeks to come. Believe that you can not live life in fear. And that is the message that we will be sending to our son. Also believe If you decide to embrace fear, then you are signing yourself up for a life where you would never go to the movies (Denver shooting), or the mall (Portland shooting), or ride in an airplane. Re. all the news crews at school today - part of life is seeing and understanding that we have become a society that loves and embraces a media circus. Perhaps gaining that learning will help diminish the interest in ridiculous reality TV shows (we can only hope)

And..when the student who left the threat is found, lets see if the parent(s)are held accountable.

This is clearly a hoax. Yet fear controls the lives of so many. Too bad.

Posting the threat of shooting with an exact day most likely is a hoax.
It doesn't mean though that students of Foothill High are not in any danger. The school is not prepared against a violent attack. Anyone can get to the school territory without being noticed, anyone can get into school bathrooms and do there whatever they want. I would not make an assumption that the thread came from a girl. I also would not make an assumption that if some psycho wants to get famous by shooting white rich kids, they will try to do it at exact day they made a threat.

Hoax or not, there was a similar posting on Facebook by a Foothill student about a week prior to this. And there is no guarantee the scrawl was made by a girl just because of the wall he/she chose for his/her post. For whatever reason, Foothill students appear to be acting out. I for one think its better to be safe than sorry.

Gee, if it is found to be a Foothill High student who caused this media frenzy - I wonder if the Tribal Restorative Justice program will become activated. Perhaps we need to discuss why little Johnny or Mary felt the need to vent their frustration in this matter. A matter that has disrupted the entire school and caused much community fear. Still think Tribal Restorative Justice is a good idea at the high school level. I think NOT. Save the time and expense and put it to better use. It's just another "touchy feely" program that we do not need in our schools. Little Johnny and Mary need to become familiar with taking responsibility for one's actions. In the meantime, I do hope everyone remains safe at Foothill and this is found to be a big expensive hoax.

I don't believe that it's ever a hoax when somebody posts a message that threatens the security of others.

Parents have a right and a responsibility to do everything that is necessary to protect their children/family.

The message could have been posted by a male just as easily.

My guess is that if a reward is made available, then somebody will go for the money and turn in the guilty individual(s).

Who knows if fear controls the lives of others?

Responsible parents keep an eye on their child's safety. That's their responsibility. GOOD JOB.

ANOTHER EVENT TO BRING THE NEXT GENERATION INTO A WORLD OF FEAR AND COMPLIANCE. DROPPED MY BOY OFF THIS MORNING AND HAD ANOTHER QUICK TALK ABOUT THE MANIPUATION OF THE MASSES, AND HOW TO AVIOD TROUBLE WHEN IT PRESENTS ITS SELF. I SEND ALL MY KIDS TO SCHOOL IN THE PLEASANTON SCHOOL DISTRICT IS THE ABILITY TO THINK FOR THEMSELVES, TO AVIOD ALL CORPRATE, SOCIAL, AND GOVERNMENT MANIPULATION AND REMEMBER ALOT OF GOOD PEOPLE GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THIS GREAT COUNTRY. WITH RECPECT TO THE CURRENT SITUATION AT FOOTHILL, I HOPE EVERYTHING TURNS OUT GOOD, I WANT NO PERSON TO FEEL THREATENED, CAN THIS BECOME A REAL SITUATION OF DANGER ? SURE IT CAN, BUT WE CAN NOT LET OUR LIVES BE GUILDED BY FEAR. AND THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT THE LIBERAL MENTALITY HAS IN STORE FOR THE MASSES OF THIS COUNTRY. THIS IS ABOUT SCARING THE NEXT COUPLE OF GENERATIONS, RIGHT OUT OF THE SECOND AMENDMENT. WELL THIS IS WHERE THE BLEEDING HEART LIBERALS START TO CHIME IN. GO AHEAD AND TELL EVERYONE HOW IF YOU HAD YOUR WAY, YOU WOULD HAVE ALL GUNS REMOVED FROM EVERYONE IN AMERICA, EXCEPT LAW INFORCMENT, RIGHT. BE HONEST THATS WHAT YOU WOULD DO IN A SECOND. WELL THATS WRONG THE ONLY REASON THIS COUNRTY IS AS GREAT AS IT IS, IS BECAUSE OF OUR RIGHTS. EVER WATCH A LIBERAL GET TOLD "NO" OR WATCH THEM NOT GET THEIR OWN WAY, ITS LIKE SOME SPOILED LITTLE RICH KID. ONE DAY EVEN THE LIBERALS WILL GET TOLD NO, AND ON THAT DAY THEY WILL WAKE UP TOO.

say what?

Is this a HOAX? A person who is angry and trying to scare everybody?
Labeling reasonably concerned parents who only desire that their children remain safe?

This country is great for countless reasons. It has nothing to do with abusive tags that you toss out as if they mean something.

Tell everybody why you believe that the USA is great. I'm waiting.

The graffiti, whether a hoax or not, was written by someone who feels alienated from the rest of the community -- to the point of either threatening or "joking" with no regard for the consequences of the "joke." Should this person be identified, I think a restorative justice program would be right on the mark appropriate. This is the kind of incident that cries out for dialogue, not nonreflexive, authoritarian urges to punish for punishment's sake.

Posted by AnnaS, a resident of Foothill High School

First, I really hope that the person who did it will be identified and it will be done soon. Pleasanton must to know that there is no connection with Tracy and a shooting is not planned in some other place.
Second, if the graffiti was written by somebody from the school, unless this person doesn't have severe depression, this person must be punished. Foothill students are not little kids, they must know that people usually take death treats seriously.
Third, if you worry about your child safety, please visit your school and check what they actually do to protect kids. From what I saw today, Foothill students were not protected.
Maybe it's a time to reconsider how 'open' open campuses should be.

Lee, lack of appropriate punishment for past indisgressions was at least partly responsible for this incident. Why would someone fear acting out if they didn't have any repercussions for their actions? A dialogue may make you and some other touchy feely pacifists feel better about yourselves, but human nature doesn't play by your rules.

Okay, the authoritarian fascists are correct. We wouldn't have these kinds of incidents if all students were allowed to arm themselves with holstered weapons like our 13 Founding Fathers intended. Just because it usually isn't girls/women that go on a shooting ramage doesn't mean it CAN'T happen. Also, just because it is in a girl's bathroom means nothing. Very easy for any student to access any bathroom at any time during the day.

Hopefully it is just an idle threat or someone playing a sick joke.

In any event, we can't be too careful. If the school and community did nothing and something happened...well, we all know the outrage that would follow. There is probably dialogue going on between school officials, police and the students who took the pics or hopefully someone comes forth with the name of the person who wrote it.

To the kid who wrote the message:

Not sure what is going on in your life to write the message; but turn yourself in, receive help, and you can still have a great life ahead of you. We will understand you did not know how to vent your frustrations being a teenager and all this was a big misunderstanding. Don't let the authorities find you, you go to them. You will be caught, and when you do, you will be in a lot more trouble than if you turn yourself in. You are just a kid, we all were, and we all did stupid things when we were young. Don't let this ruin your life. Good luck!

This is the modern-day version of what we went through in the 80's. Back then, they would call in and say there's a bomb in the school.

I remember several beautiful Spring days each year, sitting out on the lawn of the school under shade trees, while the police went through every room with dogs. It happened like clockwork.

Authorities should look into this date - march 14.
Maybe it's the culprit's birthday; or
Maybe it's that of a teacher/student with whom the culprit may have a problem.
No harm in checking with them for red flags.

This date might be significant. Hoax or no hoax!

Keep your kid home and draw an unexcused absent if you must, however, this type of violence is becoming real EVERWHERE, and you cannot keep you or your child safe from everthying. Pleasanton is not immune.

Did you not let them go to movies after Aurora, or the mall after Portland ? Do you let them drive even after seeing the statistics of teen driving deaths?

If you are taking the threat so literally why not send them today and not tomorrow (3/14), the day actually posted?

Bottom line, you can never protect them from everything 100%. I know, I have been there...

I sent my kids to school today, they didnt want to stay home.

This "incident" was a direct threat against the lives of the students, faculty, and staff of foothill high school. Until they can assure me that the person who threatened to shoot "everybody at this school" --which includes my precious child-- has been identified and permanently removed from the school, I am not willing to risk sending my child onto the foothill campus.

No politically-charged rhetoric, guessing whether girls are capable of this level of violence, or musings on other incidents that occurred in different places or times-- none of it changes the fact that someone declared their intent to harm my child.

Until the police can assure me that this particular individual is gone (preferrably far, far away) and not ever allowed back on campus, I'm not simply trusting the school's judgement in determining whether the campus is safe. This school has consistently and repeatedly demonstrated questionable judgement in dealing with past events, so I have ample reason to be wary of their assessments.

To the person responsible for this disturbing "grafitti" : if you don't like the people at your high school, how do you think you'll feel about the people in the juvenile justice system?

No matter the age of the graffiti writer: "if you don't like the people at Foothill High School, how do you think you'll feel about the people in the criminal justice system?

Posted by Concerned Parent, a resident of Foothill High School

Well, everyone, Foothill does have a very open campus and there are after-hours activities going on many evenings so this scratching on the wall could have been posted by anyone at anytime. Heck this could have been a student from another school/team. (Sure wish we had cameras like they do in the UK.)

As far as arming kids...No, no that is not the solution. Violence begets violence. Plus, if you give a person a gun, guess what, they want to shoot it. We have too many unstable individuals out there to have guns float around as freely as they do.

Speaking of unstable - For the person typing in ALL CAPS, well, the anger depicted in your message shows that you may one of the gun toting CRAZIES that we should be concerned about. Back in the 50's/60's your written hatred would help tuck you away in an institution, which made for a safer society. But we can't do that anymore.

One possible solution: Parents, - we have to do this. How do we diffuse our anger? What example do we give our kids when we are driving? Or if our kid gets an unfair call by the ref in soccer? Do we show them the right way to handle it? What about the TV we watch? Or the movies we go to? Parents do we know where our high school kids are when they are not with us? Do we know who they are with? Do we know what they have ordered off the internet? It is our job as parents to know all of this. It is not an invasion of privacy - it is our job as parents. We must make the difference in our kids lives.

Fourth robo-call from school re status (more boilerplate than status, but that's fine -- means there's nothing to tell yet). Every interaction I've had with Pleasanton police and Foothill admin gives me confidence that they will handle it better than I would. That they will address it in the smartest best way possible.

How's about we wait to learn what the real deal is before we offer all the lessons learned and who to blame and how to punish. The investigators on the scene know a lot more than we do. I believe they will do the right things re safety. Even so, my child wants to stay home tomorrow, and I'm fine with that.

THE REASON OH CHOLO ONE OUR COUNRTY IS GREAT IS BECAUSE OF FREEDOMS. AND TO HAVE YOU EVEN ASK WHY OUR COUNTRY IS GREAT, PROVES YOU HAVE NO RESPECT FOR THE VERY REASONS THAT BROUGHT YOU OR YOUR RELATIVES HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE. I HAVE READ YOUR POSTS OVER THE YEARS AND YOU BASICLY HAVE NOTHING TO SAY MOST OF THE TIME. THIS IS NOT ABOUT KNOCKING CONCERNED PARENTS, BUT LETS BE SERIOUS, HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO A FOOTHILL SPORTS PRACTICE. FOR INSTANCE YESERDAYS TRACK PRACTICE HAD SOME GETTO RAP MUSIC GOING WITH WORDS ( AND I CANT QUOTE THE PHRASES ) GUNS, SHOOTING AND OTHER THINGS THAT ENCOURAGE BAD BEHAVIOR. AND THATS IT EXACTLY, YOU SEE WE DO HAVE FREEDOM OF SPEECH, EXPRESSION, RELIGION, PRESS, AND TO ARM YOURSELF ALONG WITH OTHERS THAT MAKE THIS COUNTRY GREAT. THE PROBLEM IS NO ONE IS RAPPING ABOUT GOOD, HAPPY, CARING, POSITIVE, UPBEAT ISSUES AND THATS BECAUSE THERE ARE NONE BEING SPOKE OF. LOOK AT WHAT OBAHMA AND HIS FOLLOWERS ARE DOING. DOES THE LIBERAL LEFT REALLY THINK NO KNOWS WHATS REALLY GOING ON. YOUR SO CALLED ENVIORMENTALIST ARE ALL ACCEPTED TERRORIST ORGANIATIONS. LOOK AT HOW THEY GO ABOUT GETTING THEIR OWN WAY. ATTACKING WHALING SHIPS, LIES TO PUSH THEIR AGENDAS, HIDDEN FUNDS, FORCED PRACTICES, AND TACTICS THAT BENIFIT THEM ONLY. WHAT SHOULD BE HAPPING IS A WELL MANAGED AMERICA AND THATS DIFFICULT WHEN THE MANAGER IN CHARGE IS A SELFISH, AGENDA MINDED, PERSON WHO WAS ELECTED FOR ALL THE WRONG REASONS. AND THIS ISNT SHOUTING, I PRERFER TO TYPE IN CAPS. THANKS.

"Here we go again" that button on the left side of your key board that has a green light is the CAP LOCK button, please push it and turn off the caps.

I think that setting a reward up is a great idea, my other is that we make it a parent day at the school. Everyone take their kids class to class, no one is going to like it!

Torn about the decision, not wanting to give some troubled child the power over the school but in these times who knows what the right decision is. We cannot make the school a prison with armed guards at the gates but we can at least do what we are doing now, make everyone aware and leave the decision to the parents.

"To Concerned parent: why only tomorrow?"

Schools should be safe every day, but increased security tomorrow is imo necessary because of the threat made at Foothill High School.

A friend called the school district today but it was already almost 4 pm and was only able to talk to the receptionist, who said there would not be increased security at a campus other than Foothill's. Yet when we got home, we heard an automated v. mail from the superintendent saying that they would have increased security at all sites. Does anyone know if they will have increased security at all schools or not? And if so, what are they planning to do? More police officers or what?

I guess that I will call the school first thing in the morning but I am thinking about keeping all my kids home for the day, and so are many friends are neighbors.

THERE ARE SO MANY PARENTS OUT THERE THAT HAVE BEEN TRYING THEIR BEST TO KEEP THEIR KIDS ON THE RIGHT TRACK BUT WITH LITTLE SUCCESS. IT COULD BE FOR UNKNOWN, BUT SURFACING, EMOTIONAL ISSUES. WE DON'T KNOW. PLEASE KEEP AN OPEN MIND AS THIS, AND OTHER SITUATIONS TO COME (AND THEY WILL), WILL SURELY SPILL OUT MORE THAN YOU OR I WILL EVER KNOW. THERE'S ALWAYS MORE TO EVERY STORY THAN WE WILL EVER GET. IF IT TURNS OUT THE PARENTS ARE NEGLIGENT...AS PARENTS (TOUGH TO PROVE)...THEN THEY SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE.

I was torn last night as to whether or not he should go to school. My thoughts went to the faculty and police that are watching out for our kids. I'm sure most are parents themselves and feel a sense of responsibilty and connection to these kids. I know I would care for these kids like they were my own; it is human nature to protect.
