Thanks for the info Kathleen, but this is about a new law that Jerry Brown signed into law on September 29, 2012 that recently went into effect. Here is the bill that was signed into law and concerns a complaint process when schools charge fees that are illegal under State law --- Web Link

The bill requires PUSD and every local school district to establish local policies and procedures to implement these complaint procedures by March 1, 2013.

I searched a little bit and didn't find that any district has complied yet, but it wasn't a thorough search. A good source for what districts are doing would be the California School Boards Association. They have a service that many district use that creates boilerplate policies for districts to adopt.

I see several Districts started the process in October including Castro Valley, etc.

I do not know where you are going with this. If there is no money then there is no money for these things unless parents are charged for this by the schools. After all, the state coffers are empty although I thought prop 30 was our savior. Please explain.

It is very simple. It is illegal to charge parents and students fees for participating in public schools or for providing textbooks or school supplies. If the District does charge parents, the State has guaranteed that by March 1, 2013, every District will have a complaint process put in place. If a District does charge the parents fees, they will be required to reimburse all parents charged.

So even if it is illegal how are they going to pay you back and with what? The point is they have no money to pay with. Having kids is expensive and if you can afford them then I suspect most can afford to pay a bit extra.

I did read the link but the whole lawsuit thing does not make any sense because there is no money to begin with. If they had money to support education in the state they would not be charging you so if you sue and win where does the money come from? You cant get blood from a turnip as they say and how much money are we really talking about for you to educate your kids and pay a bit extra each year? $500?

PUSD seems to have found the money to promote administrators and give them raises as well as hire even more administrators and consultants. It isn't about the kids after all. It is about the employees.

Hey, $500 per student can ensure up to $7,000,000 a year for administrator raises and car allowances. What a way to milk the parents.

Ha ha ha! well good luck to you but as long as we keep voting in members like we have on the board we get what we are getting. Same for what was once a very wonderful state with a great educational system. I think we are what 49th out of the 50 states with only Mississippi lower?
