The Pleasanton Planning Commission has approved plans by Starbucks to build a drive-up/walk up-only coffee shop in the Rose Pavilion just off the I-580/Santa Rita Road interchange.

The stand-alone kiosk will be in the parking lot in front of the 99 Ranch Market at the eastern edge of the pavilion. It will have no indoor or outdoor seats for customers, who will order their food and beverages either from their car at drive-up windows or by walking up to a separate pedestrian window.

The only change in Starbucks plan was a directive by planners to install signage to guide pedestrians safely to the walk-up window.

Rose Pavilion is an 189,000-square-foot triangular-shaped retail center bordered by Santa Rita and Rosewood Drive. Major tenants in addition to 99 Ranch Market are Macy’s Furniture, Carpetland and a new CVS Pharmacy, which replaced an older pharmacy building across from 99 Ranch Market that is now a Halloween costume store.

At its Oct. 21 meeting, the commission also accepted a bid by Genius Kids to open a child daycare center and preschool with an outdoor play area in the Vintage Hills Shopping Center. The facility will be on the Palomino Drive side of the center, near New Leaf Community Markets on Bernal Avenue.

  1. I wonder how long until they build one across the street from Cafe Main, so they can take them out of business. If there is a business I will never put any money in, that is it. Starsucks!

  2. …I go to a coffee house like Peets, Starbucks or Tullys. (I don’t go to Cafe Main.) Coffee houses specialize in coffee drinks, make them all day long and consistently do it well. However, I don’t go to Starbuck, Peets or Tullys for a meal… maybe a grab-and-go snack.

One glance at Cafe Main’s espresso equipment and it’s obvious why their coffee drinks are acceptable to accompany a meal (which they do well), but are not on par with that of a coffee house. There is a lot of healthy competition for food and beverage dollars downtown. If Cafe Main goes out of business, you should look to meal quality , service and consistently closing the store early vs. blaming it on a Starbucks.

  3. I always thought of a coffee shop as a place where you go and have a good cup of coffee, an espresso, a latte, a cappuccino. These chains make a mockery out of a real good cup of coffee. They add anything but the kitchen sink to their so called “coffee”. Vanilla, mint, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, hazelnut, you name it, they add it, along with a ton of sugar. they have reinvented the notion of a good coffee place, Now it is a place to buyexpensive flavored coffee drinks. Sure not for me.

  4. Starbucks only adds the flavor and/or sugars if you ask for it. They also sell straight or drip plain coffee which is a good price.

Looks like another third world problem- ah too many Starbucks in town. Poor us.
