School board set to approve consultant, realtor for possible elementary school sites

The Pleasanton school board has a packed agenda for tomorrow night's meeting, which includes the approval of using Public Property Advisors to guide the district through the process of identifying and evaluating sites for possible elementary schools and potentially disposing of surplus property through sale, lease, or exchange.

Kathleen Ruegsegger is a registered user.

It depends on the district, but generally confidential personnel are clerical staff members that handle payroll, personnel files, and other confidential information, including some of the administrative assistants, like the superintendent's assistant. The management side of the management/confidential are mostly classified supervisors and managers, but it could be others. They are not members of the two bargaining units (APT and CSEA).

There is a site, the Neal Elementary site, that the District promised to build an elementary school on 15 years ago.

So now they want to sell it? Unbelievable.

Hasn't the District sold each and every site to developers to build more and more housing that it had originally promised the residents to build a school on? The list is:

South Pleasanton site
Busch site
Del Prado site
North Pleasanton site
Valley Trails site
Crellin site

I have come to conclusion that PUSD's union and management do not have any interest in building new schools, but just bait and switch the public on sites that it acquires, then sells later to developers.

Crooks, you are right. The South Pleasanton site (on Sycamore Road) goes even further. The district used imminent domain to purchase that site as it was 'essential' to the district. The owners of that land did not want to see but the district forced them by imminent domain. Then the district sat on that property and then sold it off for a profit; completely screwing the previous owners. When you have the district talk about a 'tech fund', that is the profit they stole from the family in South Pleasanton.

When the Neal site was up for discussion, the union lobbied heavily to not build the school. The unions feel that all the income our district received belongs to the unions; not to the residents. Their feeling was that if money went to open a school, it had personnel overhead, taking away money that could be given to current employees as a raise. The school board and administration never had any intention of building the school but still spent a ton of money on lawyers and legal expenses with Signature Properties.

Probably not coincidentally, one of our previous school board members was a lawyer for the developers. His clients benefited by school sites being converted into new housing.

The school site where the girl was hit with the paddle by an idiot, sixth grade boy is Harvest Park, not Hart. The girl's family should go after the boy and his family for any bills that were incurred. If the District ends up settling with the girl's family, the District should in turn go after the boy's family.

Completely agree with III, I have been listening to this district "promise" new schools for 15 years. If anyone thinks for one second another school is going to be built you are sadly mistaken. This is another waste of our money hiring another consultant/realtor. So for all those on the school board - take a look at your meeting notes from 2000-2008ish - you are basically doing the same exact thing you did back then when others were on the board. Hire demographer (joke), promise school, buy land, union argues no need for school, school doesn't get built, district sells land. That's the Pleasanton school cycle!

The job of a union is to get as much salary and benefits for their members as is humanly possible.

The school unions will fight as much as possible any new school as it will siphon off money that the union feels their current members are entitled to. They previously did all these calculations on the operations cost of a new school while discussing the Neal school. That additional cost of operations of a new school comes out of the same bucket that could be used for raises.

Consultants...Consultants...Consultants...
I'm surprised that the PUSD doesn't hire a consultant to determine whether whiz flows uphill or downhill.
Didn't they get rid of a site by the dump? Now they undoubtedly want to build a school in Hacienda Business Park so they can accommodate the influx that will be coming from high-rise housing developments that were foisted upon us by Crazy Jerry Brown and his fellow leftist loons.

Here is how things work at the district...

The administration is working on putting another bond measure on a special election for March 15. They feel a special election where they get the PTAs to push parents to vote for the bond will be their best bet.

So now they have hired a consultant. They have told the consultant what the result of the consultant's study will say (i.e., we need another school and a bond measure). The consultant is then told to do a study that has that outcome (if it does not have that outcome, the consultant will not be working for the district again nor for any other district that our administrators talk with). When the consultant finishes the study saying the extra school is needed and we need a bond measure, the district administration will say that the need for the bond was proven by an outside consultant/expert.

Based on my experience, you should not trust the reports of the "independent" consultants if they are hired by the administration and report to the administration. Their role is to be a puppet for the administration.

Our job in the community now is to replace the two incumbents at the next school board election and charge the board to make some drastic changes in the administration and work on building trust and communications. After that is done then we can discuss bonds, etc. Until then, you are an idiot for giving this district any more money.

You are right that the threshold of 50% will make it easier for the district but I am still holding some hope that the community will be real frustrated with the district and not support the measure at this time. I am hopeful that one or two current board members will not support the bond at this time, which will send a message to the community. While those two board members have been powerless against the three members of the board who rubberstamp the administration, they have power in the message. The main purpose of a bond is to support new growth. In the past, development has paid its own way with higher developer fees to mitigate the impacts of the development. It is not fair to those who have paid their mitigation fees to also have to pay the mitigation fees for the new development. That is double taxation. The other issue is the bond would pay for the facilities but the district does not currently have the operating capital to support additional facilities, or so claim the teachers and their union. So I would not think the unions would want more facilities which would take operating funds that could be used for raises.
