Pleasanton to San Carlos and/or San Fran?? Terrible? Ok?

Original post made by NC to CA, Valley View Elementary School, on Jul 2, 2014

Hi, I read all the great comments on the topic of Pleasanton to South Bay coomute, very insightful. We are getting ready to relocate to Bay area. Looking like Pleasanton will be the place. I went out a month ago looking around at various cities- loved pleasanton and Peninsula just too pricey and old houses, no yards unless you spend $5k a month on rent (we are moving from 4900 sq feet so cutting sq footage in half is bad enough- in Peninsula wed be living in a 1400 sq foot hovel lol). I drove to Pleasanton one day from San Jose and once from mountain view and didnt mind the drive really at all. (off peak hours). It did feel like you are leaving all the 'action' a bit though, but small price to pay for everything Pleasanton has to offer. Question, my office is San Carlos, Im ok doing the commute, dont mind driving but my daughter may be working in San Fran, north part of san fran and she is freaked out by how long the commute appears to be. Is there any train that is workable? it looks like Bart goes about a mile to her office, but then she would have to take a bus? is there any not so desirable part of Pleasanton? We are looking at a house kind of close to downtown, by McKinley park, Valley View ele- ok area?? thanks!

Hello NC to CA,

There's no sugar coating this, traffic will be bad every day between 6:30am and 9:30am. There are many chokepoints between here, Mountain View and San Carlos.

Strangely enough, evenings seem to be worse on the reverse commute. I normally hit traffic up until 7pm and at times 7:30pm.

Good luck.

You have NO IDEA about the horrid commute unless you drive it during commute hours. Which would be something like 6 AM- 10 AM going to work and 2 PM - 7 PM returning. Driving to San Carlos via either the Dumbarton or San Mateo bridges is a crap shoot at any commute time. I have had a 45 minute commute turn into a 3 hour commute and that is just for little things, not even major accidents. You have to be crazy to think that living in Pleasanton can make up for that. Take your lumps on size and find something on the correct side of the bridge. As for your daughter getting to the north side of SF -- she is better rooming with others in the city, near her workplace, until she can decide if trying to get there from Pleasanton would be at all worth the effort.

If I had to drive it more than twice a month, or ever during rush hours, I would trade my roomy Pleasanton house for a shack on the West side of the Bay any time. Also, check out the downtowns anywhere from Sunnyvale through Millbrae -- any one of them has exponentially more going on that downtown Pleasanton.

Hey Cholo---I have lived in Pleasanton for 17 years... The ONLY thing I have ever had stolen was my CAR in LIVERMORE, when I lived in the Portola Meadows Apt in 1994. Never got it back---so I moved to Pleasanton! So be careful about speaking what you don't know anything about.........

Cholo lives in Livermore, he does not have a clue about life in Pleasanton.

Cholos daily life is consumed with trashing Pleasanton.

You will find Pleasanton to be a great community, a great place to live.

There are many amenities that comes with living in Pleasanton.

Visit Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton this week, visit Stoneridge Mall,

stroll through downtown, have lunch, stay for dinner.

I've lived in P-town since 1982 and like it a lot. I have wonderful black and Asian neighbors. The "dullness" here appeals to me a lot. I have commuted to SF on BART (about 90 min door to door to an office one block away from the Montgomery Street BART station). It's definitely grueling. I just started a job in Fremont, 17 miles awnay: easy to find a sweet spot in the AM so it takes about 35 min, but comig home is between 1 and 2 hours of the worst kind of driving. Just tonight I saw a man get out of his car to throw up and another car that ran out of gas, plus two roadside accidents. No real options unless your company runs a wifi private shuttle service. A two-hour commute is not such a problem then.

I agree with the earlier commenter: rent a room close to your job if you insist on living in P-town. The commute will only get worse in the next few years.

BUT THEN: when driverless cars happen in 5 yrs or so, it will increase the capacity of freeways 6 times while also making the commute very bearable because one is inside one's own car that is suitable for working, reading, sleeping. Way fewer accidents (the insurance industry is going to oppose driverless cars for this reason); prob an electric car so it could be lots cheaper too, to operate.

But for the present, do everything you can to plan for a short commute.
