Romneys in Dream California Home

The Romney's purchased the 3,000 sq. ft. home in 2008 for $12 million. The lot sits above a cove that is one of the choicest beaches in La Jolla.
The city of San Diego had approved the Romneys' plans for a two-story home, with a massive, 4,500 square foot basement for their cars, along with an elaborate elevator to lift the cars and their occupants to higher levels in the home.
A neighbor challenged the permit, claiming the expanded house and its ten percent smaller version built for Mormon missionaries would effectively block his view to the ocean.
But the California Coastal Commission, along with the City of San Diego, rejected the challenge. "When someone is as rich as the Romneys, they should be able to block anyone's view all they want to," said one commissioner. A city commission stated that "If neighbors don't like the palatial estate going up between them and their precious ocean, they can go somewhere else to live. Maybe Bulgaria would have them. But in America, this is the land of the free, and that means being able to do whatever one wants to with one's extraordinary wealth."
