So-called yard signs supporting candidates for the Nov. 6 municipal election for Pleasanton mayor and City Council went up Saturday, the first day these signs could be publicly posted.

Although called yard signs, many are large posters, some as large as a full-sized sheet of plywood.

The signs can only be posted on private property with the authorization of the property owner, including the Alameda County Fairgrounds, businesses and private schools.

By law, they must be removed the day after the election, on Nov. 7.

Although most signs were posted in accord with city laws, at least one candidate — Erlene DeMarcus for City Council — found that her campaign assistants had posted her signs on public property, where code enforcement officers told her to take them down. In fact, one of DeMarcus’ billboards will still there this morning, on the Bernal Community Park fence facing Pleasanton Avenue.

Most of the candidates also stood with their signs and offered their own voter information at Farmers Market, where they’re likely to be stationed every Saturday through Nov. 3.

The candidates, in addition to Cook-Kallio and DeMarcus are Jerry Thorne for mayor, and Jerry Pentin, Karla Brown and Miked Harris for City Council.

  1. “at least two candidates — Cheryl Cook-Kallio for mayor and Erlene DeMarcus for City Council — found their campaign assistants had posted their signs on public property, where code enforcement officers told them to take them down.”

In Erlene’s case, she had to know where her HUGE sign was going. This was not a yard sign but a 4 x 8 foot sign, larger than the code even allows in the city.

Looks like those candidates who are doing illegal things have been trained by either Hayashi or Lockyer. I am not sure if these candidates/elected officials just feel they are entitled to do what they want, or they have some type of brain deficiency that does not detect doing something wrong.

  2. Considering that David Harmer’s giant banner was posted illegally on 680 past Christmas two years ago, I’d say that candidates on all sides have difficulty following simple rules.

  3. I, for one, will NOT be voting for anyone running for City Council who did not take the time to learn the CITY ordinances on where signs can legally be placed. If they can’t be bothered to do some basic research on campaigning in Pleasanton, how can they be trusted to do the research on important issues that come to the table?

  4. I call, SHENNANNIGANS!!!

Harmer’s “giant” banner was posted on Private Property. You know, the kind of land owned by private citizens, taxpayers, etc. Just like the kind of land/hills/ridgelines that “Karla The Conqueror” tried to save from being developed by those same taxpaying private citizens.

Hey Karla, are they still “your hills?” We haven’t forgotten your little land grab.

  5. This is cook-callio’s third campaign within a 6 year period. she knows what rules are–she just doesn’t think they apply to her. And the fire union putting up the signs for her know what the rules are but will do anything to protect their pensions.

I can hardly wait to see DeMarcus’s campaign finance disclosure at the end of the month and how much Tong and his folks have given her. Those signs have to have cost quite a bit!

  6. David Harmer had three giant banners posted on *public* state/city property along 680. Two were removed promptly, after being reported to the campaign office. The third was also reported to the campaign office several times, and was finally removed by the taxpayers (CalTrans) around New Years’ when it started to fall off the fence during a storm and became a traffic hazard.

  7. The City of Pleasanton has their own Ordinance for citizens running for City Offices ( candidates may not place signs on City/Public property). Candidates are given instructions for sign size/ placements, when they apply to run for City Office. It is each candidate’s RESPONSIBILITY to advise/monitor their supporters. They should have been removed immediately and the candidates charged by the City. All of the candidates know this, as do the Firefighter union members. Harmer was not running for a City office, but for a State Office. The State and County have different rules. Haven’t you ever noticed that those running for those kind of Offices, place their signs on public property all of the time (fences, poles etc.). Nothing is ever done about it.
