Dublin police drop charges against rapper MC Hammer

 | Dublin police have dropped charges against rapper MC Hammer in connection with an incident at Hacienda Crossings Shopping Center.
The rapper sent out a message on Twitter reading "Thank You to all my friends and supporters. All CHARGES DECLINED. Dropped. Have A great Weekend."
Dublin police could not be reached for comment Saturday.
Police said previously that Hammer, also known as 50-year-old Stanley Kirk Burrell, was approached after officers spotted him parked at a Shell gas station near the shopping center around 10:20 p.m. on Feb. 21. The car had expired registration tags, police Lt. Herb Walters said.
Burrell could not produce any proof that the vehicle was his and became uncooperative with officers, Walters said. He was arrested on
suspicion of obstructing an officer in the performance of his duties and resisting an officer.
The Tracy resident was booked into the Santa Rita Jail but posted bail and was released, Walters said.
According to Burrell, a police officer approached him and arrested him without cause.
In one Tweet, he said the officer "was tapping on my car window, I rolled down the window and he said, 'Are you on parole or probation?'"
"It was comical to me until he pulled out his guns, blew his whistle and yelled for help," he tweeted.
He then tweeted, "only thing more dangerous than a scared man with a gun, is a scared man with an agenda, a gun and a badge."

Once one is arrested, it is the district attorneys office who files or dismisses charges. Based on his "tweet", it sounds like the DA dismissed it for a variety of reasons (interest of justice, proceed on a lesser count, further investigation required, etc). And just because charges are dropped, doesn't mean the crime was not committed.

The one positive aspect of this story seems to be that even though the various law enforcement agencies all shout it out loud & clear for the ACLU that they don't "racially profile" suspects, it looks like there might be some dissension with that policy.

Posted by Bill, a resident of the Canyon Creek neighborhood, on Mar 11, 2013 at 1:51 pm If I drive around in an unregistered vehicle, cannot provide a registration and then give the officer who pulled me over a big hassle and the "don't you know who I am" treatment, I would expect to be arrested and deservedly so. Cops are only going to put up with so much nonsense before they arrest someone. The DA wisely decided pursuing the matter would not be worth the grief since it was a misdemeanor and this washed up idiot would have insisted on a jury trial and screamed racism all the while.

If the police care about their public relations image then they will care about him having millions of Twitter followers who he can influence with out needing the cooperation of the press. The Arab Spring and the Occupy Movement really thousands of people using Twitter.
Maybe he got uppity with them and maybe he had a reason to or if he was insulted or maybe not, who knows, but the police ought to be civil and not confrontational as it seems this particular officer might have been.
