If the 49ers win today's Super Bowl, San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon is urging revelers to celebrate responsibly or face the consequences.

Kickoff for the 47th Super Bowl is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Pacific on CBS, Channel 5.

"We will not tolerate the types of property destruction and violence that took place during the World Series," Gascon said Friday at a press conference.

A total of 36 people were arrested during post-game celebrations in October, 23 of them for felonies, after the San Francisco Giants defeated the Detroit Tigers in the fourth game of the World Series.

Celebrants lit a number of bonfires in the middle of Mission Street, broke windows and, in one notorious incident, set a Muni Bayshore Express bus on fire at Market and Kearny streets.

Gascon said today that the district attorney's office charged 14 cases in connection with the World Series, mostly felonies, including assault on a police officer, negligent discharge of a firearm, robbery, resisting arrest, battery and arson. Many others were cited on lesser infractions.

Potential penalties for the defendants range from 25 years to life in prison for defendants with previous strikes to three years in county jail,
three years probation and 150 to 200 hours in community service, he said.

"One night of mayhem could have consequences that will follow you the rest of your life," Gascon said. "Wear your red and gold with pride and show that San Francisco is a world class city with world class sports fans."

Gascon's warning followed a tour of the Mission District earlier this week by Mayor Ed Lee, Police Chief Greg Suhr and Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White. The tour was intended to reassure merchants and residents in the Mission District, where many storefronts were damaged or vandalized with
graffiti during the revelry.
