All lanes in both directions of the San Mateo Bridge are opened at 4 a.m. this morning after crews completed major resurfacing and other repairs over the weekend.
Caltrans, which earlier announced that the bridge would be closed next weekend, too, said today that the work completed over the past two days was sufficient. Any further work can be done a lane or two at a time and at night.
Despite being done on a weekend, there were long traffic backups on I-880 leading to the San Mateo bridge exit. Signs advised motorists to use the Dumbarton Bridge to the south or the Bay Bridge to the north. Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition? See a sample and sign-up for Express.
