The Pleasanton Police Department and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will hold the ninth annual Drug Take Back Program from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow.

The public will have the opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by getting rid of potentially dangerous, expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.

According to the 2010 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, more Americans currently abuse prescription drugs than those using cocaine, hallucinogens, and heroin combined.

The public can anonymously drop off prescription drugs for free in the lobby of the Pleasanton Police Department at 4833 Bernal Ave.

During the last eight Drug Take Back events, almost one million pounds of prescription drugs were turned in at more that 5,300 sites operated by the DEA’s state and local law enforcement partners.

Pleasanton police said this initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue.

For more information about the event, contact Sgt. Penelope Tamm at 931-5100.

Other Tri-Valley collection sites include:

* 510 La Gonda Way, Danville

* 100 Civic Plaza, Dublin

* 1110 South Livermore Avenue, Livermore

* 2401 Crow Canyon Road, San Ramon.

  1. Tell us more about how to submit ‘anonymous’ drugs…how do they accept them – in what packaging? All prescription meds come with personal names and identification info all over the labeling, so can the labels be removed…meaning you will not know the type of substance in the container.
