Safeway opened its new self-service gas station in Pleasanton this weekend with first-day customers snaking their way through parking lot and station lanes with the help of attendants.
Both a new Starbucks coffee shop and CVS Pharmacy will open in the coming weeks.
All are located in the Gateway Center at Valley and Bernal avenues across from the Alameda County Fairgrounds.
When the new Starbucks is completed, Starbucks will close its existing coffee house in the shopping center across Bernal. Starbucks also operates a coffee shop inside the Lifestyle supermarket as well as at its other supermarket in Pleasanton, located at Santa Rita Road and Valley Avenue.
The three-bay, nine-pump self-service gasoline station is located in front of the main entrance to Wells Fargo Bank with Starbucks planned for the remainder of the site, between the gas station and the northbound I-680 off-ramp.
The station has the same hours as the supermarket, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A small operations building houses the station cashier, where small items, such as candy, are sold, but the 24-foot-high kiosk will not be a mini-mart, Safeway officials said.
Three sets of three fueling pumps line each of three bays, with dual hoses to accommodate 15 vehicles at a time, with a "stacking" area capable of holding another 18 vehicles. The pumps offer low- and high-octane gasoline and diesel fuel.
Two underground fuel storage tanks each hold 30,000 gallons of fuel, with one for low-octane gasoline and the second divided into three compartments to hold mid- and high-octane gasoline and diesel fuel. Suppliers will be making an estimated three deliveries a day over a 24-hour period seven days a week.
The "CVS" sign went up last Tuesday at the new pharmacy at the southern boundary of the Safeway Gateway Center site.
